Monday morning, though, was the first of five days in which all Midtown Direct trains on the Montclair/Boonton, Morris and Essex lines were being rerouted to Hoboken, forcing New York City-bound commuters to transfer to either a PATH train or NY Waterway ferry.

The biggest factor behind Monday morning's relatively smooth commute, as Stessel indicated, was that so many people apparently decided either to work in a different location away from the city, work from home or take the week off entirely.
