Review of The Doors' "Morrison Hotel"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
One of the disappointing aspects of Morrison Hotel- and by no means confined solely to this album- is the often dreary nature of the lyrics.
The funky ‘Peace Frog’ refers, in part, to Morrison’s violent arrest by police at a New Haven concert in 1969: "Blood in the streets in the town of New Haven." This wonderfully segues into the dreamy ‘Blue Sunday’, a haunting (albeit unoriginal) love song, of which Morrison’s singing is an obvious highlight.
Morrison Hotel should prove two things if nothing else- The Doors can write excellent songs and Jim Morrison is not God (even if they did name a hotel after him).

Morrison Hotel opens with a powerful blast of raw funk called "Roadhouse Blues." It features jagged barrelhouse piano, fierce guitar, and one of the most convincing raunchy vocals Jim Morrison has ever recorded.
This angry hard rock is that at which the Doors have always excelled, and given us so seldom, and this track is one of their very best ever, with brooding lyrics that ring chillingly, true: "I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer/The future's uncertain and the end is always near."
But we've all been there before, not a few times, and their well of resources has proven a standing lake which is slowly drying up.

The next-to-last Doors album, recorded prior to Jim Morrison's still mystery-shrouded death in a Parisian bathtub, eschewed much of the band's previous penchant for baroque musical, poetic, and philosophical pretensions (this was, after all, the back-to-roots era of the Beatles' Let It Be, the Stones' Let It Bleed, and Dylan's Nashville Skyline).
Jim Morrison's vocals adapt beautifully from style to style, Robbie continues to show us why he's one of the best guitarists in rock, John's drumming is solid, and Manzarek's keyboards are particularly noteworthy.
Morrison had an image in his head of all the lives who's music has influenced him so, and he nailed the experience in voice form.
