The chain was an eight-carat gold and weighed eight penny-weights." The Illinois State Geological Survey has said the coal in which the gold chain was found is 260 - 320 million years old.

A second tornado, identified as the Harvel, Illinois tornado, initially touched down approximately 2 miles north-northwest of Harvel Illinois or 3.5 miles south of the first tornado track between 710 and 715 PM CDT.
The strongest circulation noted with the center supercell was responsible for spawning the long-track tornado over the panhandle of Montgomery county Illinois.
One possible cause of the center storm becoming tornadic was due to outflow boundary interaction with the rear flank of this storm.
