Telegraph key - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Telegraph key (also known as the Morse key) is a generic term for any switching device used primarily to send Morse code.
Keys offering one switch for dashes and another for dots were dubbed "iambic," but others misheard the term, interpreting it as "biambic." Thus keys with multiple switches have been dubbed "triambic", and beyond, i.e.

The telegraph key Samuel Morse used on his first line in 1844 was very simple--a strip of spring steel that could be pressed against a metal contact.
Alfred Vail, Morse's partner, designed this key, in which the gap was more easily adjustable because of changes in its spring tension.

Morse's application for a patent, dated 28 Sept., 1837, was filed as a caveat at the U.S. patent-office, and in December of the same year he made a formal request of congress for aid to build a telegraph-line.
Morse was received with distinction by scientists in each country, and his apparatus was exhibited under the auspices of tile Academy of Sciences in Paris, and the Royal Society in London.
Morse's patents were violated, his honor disputed, and even his integrity was assailed, and rival companies devoured for a time all the profits of the business, but after a series of vexatious lawsuits his rights were affirmed by the U.S. supreme court.

 The Electromagnetic Telegraph
Morse contrived a system in which magnets moved a suspended pendulum to which was attached a pen or pencil to make zig-zag lines on a paper tape in response to long and short impulses (the "pen lever").
Morse, for his part, was completely unaware of the decades of previous work on telegraphs, and even claimed that Steinheil had stolen his ideas, when an account of Steinheil's work in a translation from an article in the Neue Würzburger Zeitung was published in the United States in 1837.
Morse independently had the idea of a relay, which he conceived as a repeater to operate very long circuits, but its practical use was for operating heavy-current devices like the register in a local circuit.
