Note: Although the Mortal Kombat universe continues to expand in terms of depth of its storyline and the variety of options within the game, the principle in Mortal Kombat: Deception is the same as all predecessors-kill or be killed, and make it as horrific as you can.
Chess Kombat is played similarly to chess; however, when a piece takes another piece they fight for the space, allowing the defender to potentially win and keep the spot.

Each selectable character in puzzle kombat has his or her own special move that may occasionally be used either to assist you or hinder your opponent.
Chess kombat is also rather deliberate, but you might expect this, since it's essentially a turn-based strategy game like chess--except when two pieces meet on the map, you and your opponent must fight it out.
So while puzzle kombat and chess kombat are refreshingly different types of modes to include in a fighting game, don't expect them to take too much of your attention away from the actual fighting here.

Review - Mortal Kombat: Armageddon // PlayStation 2 /// Eurogamer
Violence in media is now far more accepted than it was when Mortal Kombat first hit the arcades, but despite the fact that the world has moved on around it, Midway's once-celebrated fighting series has barely moved an inch in the fourteen years since its introduction.
Much of the lure of each new Mortal Kombat title is going through the characters and seeing what gruesome new ways those bloody-minded chaps at Midway have come up with for putting a full stop at the end of a fight, so to do away with this is really pretty brave.
The core combat is still as rigid and throwaway as the Mortal Kombat series has ever been and bereft of the kitsch appeal of the earlier games, Armageddon is pretty much as forgettable as brawlers come these days.

PlanetDreamcast: Games - Reviews - Mortal Kombat Gold
1993's Mortal Kombat II was another smash hit, 1995's Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 added the ability to run and string together super-combos to the mix, and 1997's Mortal Kombat 4 finally brought the series into the world of polygons.
You would think Mortal Kombat Gold would be a compilation of all the Mortal Kombat games on one CD, but it's actually just an enhanced version of Mortal Kombat 4 with five new characters (for a total of twenty) and better graphics than the original arcade game.
This is basically the exactly the same game as Mortal Kombat 3, outside of the 3D graphics, addition of weapons combat (which is incredibly lame and totally useless, you probably won't even use them), and the ability to interact (very) little with the arenas.
