The music, the pacing, the INTENT of the film-making are markedly different from this director's other works.
MORTAL THOUGHTS is not a wholly satisfying film, but I am humbled to say that I was amazed by Demi Moore's performance.
I have never sought out a film starring this husky voiced pinup, and have found her off-screen persona to be arrogant and grating.

When you come to think of it, he said, a leader who is suffering from a sickness, except of course one that prevents him from carrying out his duties, is preferable to one who isn't.
If you know that your claim to your mortal shell has become more tenuous than that of others, you are going to treat every day of your life as a blessing, or grace.
More to the point, you are going to think more in terms of the legacy you want to bequeath than of the wealth you want to conserve.

Mortal Thoughts review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
At one point in the film "Mortal Thoughts," the main character's husband tells her that she isn't really married to him; she's married to her best friend.
"Mortal Thoughts" was directed by Alan Rudolph, who is known for making quirky films like "Choose Me" and "Made in Heaven." This film is much darker, which is obvious by the moody shadows and high-contrast lighting.
Although much of "Mortal Thoughts" is contrived, especially in hindsight, it still offers a gripping story that keeps one's eyes riveted to the screen and to its compelling stars.

More extraordinary still is the fact that Moore has rarely impressed in front of the camera - her rare quality performances tending to come in ensemble pieces such as Deconstructing Harry.
But those that doubt Demi Moore's abilities would do well to check out Mortal Thoughts, the picture that proves that, while her reputation as a star is a bit baffling, she's earned the right to call herself an actress.
Mortal Thoughts sees Moore star as Cynthia, neighbour to the troubled James and Joyce Urbanski (Willis and Headly).

Be that as it may, this is a superior thriller mainly because the story is compelling and the acting is first rate.
Alan Rudolph's Mortal Thoughts is a drama about murder, not movie murder where a hitmen shoots a guy dead with rock music on the soundtrack, but real-life murder, where the killer/killers have a crises of conscience, act with shock, disbelief and paranoia.
The murder or murders in Mortal Thoughts are not commited by a movie-physcopath, but people who have lost their nerve.

May 22, 1991 -- ``Mortal Thoughts,'' staring Bruce Willis and Demi Moore is an interesting, dark film that some have compared to Akira Kurosawa's classic ``Rashomon.''
This is no classic, but it does feature some good performances, particularly by Willis, who plays the world's biggest jerk, an abusive deadbeat, drug-using, gambling husband.
``Mortal Thoughts'' seems like a European film in its construction in that, unlike most Hollywood films, it does encourage the viewer to think as well as just watch and listen.

Another problem for her is that this movie (and others she has made) are not the sort of films that the Academy pays much attention to.
Mortal Thoughts (which she co-produced, by the way) is too low-budget, too "common" one might say, for any part in it to be taken seriously in an artistic sense.
This subtle, intelligent, fabulously well-constructed film is one of the very best crime movies to come from the States in recent years and deserves to be a lot better known.

THE REAL CRIME: HOMICIDE, MORTAL THOUGHTS
The same is true in films, where crime dramas like THE GODFATHER have served as examinations of society even while fulfilling expectations of the genre.
In the same way, David Mamet's HOMICIDE and Alan Rudolph's MORTAL THOUGHTS are, respectively, a cop drama and a thriller that, at the same time, pose questions of identity - for the former, what it means to be a Jew, while for the latter, what it means to be a woman, within their contexts.
Unlike almost every other Mamet film, HOMICIDE starts off with a bang; a raid to try and catch Randolph (Ving Rhames), a drug dealer suspected of being a cop-killer.
