Mortar (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typically a modern mortar consists of a tube into which is dropped a mortar shell (bomb) onto a firing pin resulting in the detonation of the propellant and the firing of the shell.
Smaller mortars (up to 81 mm) are commonly used and transported by infantry based mortar sections as a substitute for, or in addition to, artillery.
The largest mortars ever developed were the French "Monster Mortar" (developed by Henri-Joseph Paixhans in 1832), "Mallet's mortar" (developed by Woolwich Arsenal, London in 1857) and the "Little David" (developed in the USA for use in World War II).

First World War.com - Weapons of War - Trench Mortars
The chief advantage of the mortar was that it could be fired from the (relative) safety of the trench, avoiding exposure of the mortar crews to the enemy.
The German mortars at the start of the war - translated into German as 'minenwerfer' (literally 'mine-thrower') had been designed in 1908-09 and, at a monster-size 25 cm, were rifled mortars mounted upon field carriages (each mortar of this size weighed approximately 95 kg).
Mortars fired from this device had a maximum range of 1,500 yards and featured a built-in 25-second fuse, although this was soon changed to a percussion (impact) fuse.

AllRefer.com - mortar, in building (Technology: Terms And Concepts) - Encyclopedia
mortar, in building, mixture of lime or cement with sand and water, used as a bedding and adhesive between adjacent pieces of stone, brick, or other material in masonry construction.
Lime mortar, a common variety, consists usually of one volume of well-slaked lime to three or four volumes of sand, thoroughly mixed with sufficient water to make a uniform paste easily handled on a trowel.
Primitive mortars took various forms: in early Egypt, Nile mud was used as an adhesive; the Mesopotamians used bitumen (the slime mentioned in Genesis) or sometimes a mixture of clay, water, and chopped straw, to cement together their unbaked bricks; Greeks of the Mycenaean era probably employed a soft bituminous clay.

Mortars   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Mortars are light weight and man portable (so say the people not carrying the bastards!) In many militaries light infantry units have a mortar section (three mortars)in every company.
Mortars work very well against dismounted infantry and light vehicles but against tanks and armored personnel carriers their use is limited.
Automated mortar defense networks may be used to detect incoming mortar (and artillery) rounds, back track their trajectory, pinpoint the location of the enemy mortar(s) or cannon(s) and transmit a fire mission to automated mortar or artillery units.

Mortars are often portable by infantry and can be used as a small-scale substitute for artillery.

 Mortar Gunboats
Mortars could not be placed directly on the bottom of landing craft since there was no way to keep the recoil from kicking mortars backward when the piece was fired.
The advantage of the mortar boat plan was that it provided assault troops with heavy effective fire during that period in the landings when they were most vulnerable the time between the lifting of the naval bombardment and the establishment of supporting weapons on shore.
Mine fields prevented the mortar boats from approaching closer than 1,500 yards from shore, but the effectiveness of the mortar barrage was such that 3 minutes after it had been lifted the troops, previously pinned down by enemy fire, encountered no opposition on advancing into the heavy woods.

Mortars for repointing should be softer or more permeable than the masonry units and no harder or more impermeable than the historic mortar to prevent damage to the masonry units.
Historically, mortar acted as a bedding material--not unlike an expansion joint--rather than a "glue" for the masonry units, and moisture was able to migrate through the mortar joints rather than the masonry units.
