First World War.com - Weapons of War - Trench Mortars
The chief advantage of the mortar was that it could be fired from the (relative) safety of the trench, avoiding exposure of the mortar crews to the enemy.
The German mortars at the start of the war - translated into German as 'minenwerfer' (literally 'mine-thrower') had been designed in 1908-09 and, at a monster-size 25 cm, were rifled mortars mounted upon field carriages (each mortar of this size weighed approximately 95 kg).
Mortars fired from this device had a maximum range of 1,500 yards and featured a built-in 25-second fuse, although this was soon changed to a percussion (impact) fuse.

History of the 4.2" Chemical Mortar
The standard mortar barrel could not be dropped below an angle of 45º with the horizon, and a way had to be found of holding the barrel level with the ground and at the same time neutralizing the tremendous recoil of a quarter of a million pounds.
Mortars could not be placed directly on the bottom of landing craft since there was no way to keep the recoil from kicking mortars backward when the piece was fired.
All in all, LCI(M)s (the M for mortar), as the mortar-mounted craft came to be designated, participated in a dozen landings in the Pacific during the latter part of 1944 and the war months of 1945.

Mortar (weapon) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mortar can also be a launcher for fireworks, a hand-held or vehicle-mounted projector for smoke shells or flares, or a large grenade launcher.
Smaller mortars (up to 81 mm) are commonly used and transported by infantry based mortar sections as a substitute for, or in addition to, artillery.
A mortar round could be aimed to fall directly into trenches where artillery shells, due to their low angle of flight, could not possibly go.

Bruce N. Canfield: The Three Inch Stokes Mortar
Mortars were curved-trajectory weapons that could lob shells into trenches whose occupants would be unaffected by flat trajectory weapons but, compared to standard artillery, mortars had a relatively short range.
The shell was equipped with a "safety pin" that was removed prior to dropping the shell into the mortar tube.
It is difficult to overstate the importance of the Stokes mortar.

 Plastic Mortar Tubes
Our fireworks mortars in racks are professionally made wooden racks containing 6 fl HDPE mortar tubes, each plugged and glued with a wooden plug.
If a shell detonates in a fiberglass mortar, the tube tends to shred and tear, and is much safer than metal tubes or PVC (which should never be used in fireworks, because it can produce dangerous shrapnel).
This is an angled mortar rack, with 1.91 ID x approximately 15 inches long mortar tubes with wooden plugs in the bottom of each.

 Battlefield Mortars for Rifts
Mortars are smoothbore, muzzle-loading artillery piece that fires indirect shells at relatively low velocities, at short ranges, and with a high-arcing ballistic trajectory.
Most modern mortars consists of a tube into which is dropped a mortar shell onto the firing pin which results in the detonation of the propellant and the firing of the shell.
Mortar range can be increased by the use of additional charges although minimum range increases and rate of fire decreases as charges are increased.

What are Mortars, Rockets, and Grenades? - Emily Yoffe - Slate Magazine
Although the shells launched by the Palestinians were of low quality and caused little damage, a small high-quality shell is the equivalent of a stick of dynamite and can blow up a car.
When the Israelis respond to mortars by "shelling" Palestinians, that generally means they are shooting large-caliber guns that are mounted on armored combat vehicles, of which tanks are a subset.
Mortars were not designed to knock down walls, but were designed to hurl projectiles over walls and into the defended areas behind the walls.

Luckily indirect fire weapons like the Mortar always have very large explosive range so you do not need to be quite as acurate as you would with a direct fire weapon.
Consider the shell hitting the side of a hit a split second before it arms then having to wait for it to fall all the way to the ground before exploding.
If you are being chased by someone, consider dropping a mortar shell at your feet as you ski away.

Old Chemical Mortar Shells Found In Iraq

It appears these shells were filled with a blistering agent of some kind, like perhaps mustard gas, but that still hasn't been confirmed.
Plus, even if these were usable munitions, the 120mm mortars were not offensive weapon that could be directed against an enemy too far outside the confines of the Iraqi border.
