  Mortification - LoveToKnow 1911
A portion of the body may die in consequence of the disturbance of its nutrition by inflammation, or of a cutting off of the bloodsupply, as by pressure upon, or injury to, the blood-vessels.
This is apt to be met with in oldish persons with diseased vessels and feeble heart-action, especially if the blood is rendered less nutritious by the presence of diabetes or of kidney disease.
The rule of treatment in all cases of threatened mortification is to keep the part warm by flannel or cotton-wool, but to avoid all methods which unduly hurry the returning circulation.

 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Mortification
From this original use of the term, we see that mortification, though under one aspect it is a law of death, under another and more fundamental aspect it is a law of life, and does not destroy but elevates nature.
To this extent, mortification is obligatory on all, but those who wish to be more thorough in the service of Christ, carry it further, and strive with its aid to subdue, so far as is possible in this life, that "rebellion" of the flesh against the spirit which is the internal incentive to sin.
Mortification, viewed thus as a means of curing bad habits and implanting good ones, has its recognized place in the methods even of those who are engaged in pursuing purely natural ends.

A Discourse of Mortification by Stephen Charnock
Mortification must be universal; not one deed, but deeds, little and great, must fall under the edge, the brats must be dashed against the wall.
A non-commission of a particular sin is not an evidence of the mortification of the root of it.
But mortification is from a strength given, a new mettle put into the soul, both a courage and strength to resist it; there is a ‘strength in the inward man,’ Eph.

I say, then, that the first thing in mortification is the weakening of this habit, that it shall not impel and tumultuate as formerly; that it shall not entice and draw aside; that it shall not disquiet and perplex the killing of its life, vigour, promptness, and readiness to be stirring.
Mortification of sin is peculiarly from the death of Christ, which shall assuredly be accomplished by it.

Mortification, then, is clearly one of the practical doctrines of Holy Writ, as we hope to show abundantly in what follows.
The promise of life, then, is not made to the work of mortification, but to him that mortifies his flesh; and that not for his mortification, but because he is in Christ, of which this mortification is the evidence.

Bodily mortification is merely a penance voluntarily imposed on the body, like kneeling on a hard stone or wood floor instead of a cushioned kneeler; like fasting and abstinence in Lent; like wearing an uncomfortable shirt or pair of shoes and offering up the discomfort.
Small mortifications to be sure, but remember the words of the Little Flower, Saint Therese, who said, "little things, done well, done often and done out of love mean more to God than anything else." Hence, the severe bread and water fasting for a week or more is NOT advisable.
The purpose of mortification is to subdue the body and liberate the soul.

Many of the practices of corporal mortification were at one time more regularly practiced within the Church; however, due to modern psychology and thinking, the practices which inflict pain are sometimes considered to be counterproductive to one's spiritual development, as they can easily lead to pride and an unhealthy attitude toward one's body.
Some acts of corporal mortification may be helpful in checking the desires of the flesh, such as fasting.
Because of the dangers of masochism, the traditional Catholic teaching on this sort of mortification is that it be done under obedience to a spiritual director.

Mortification is one of the more prolific Christian thrash/death bands in existance.
Most of their work (particularly the earlier material) is straight-on death metal, but at various times the band has taken more of a traditional thrash approach (for example, Primitive Rhythm Machine), at other times a slower power/thrash feel (notably on Envision Evangeline) and there have been slight hardcore elements scattered throughout as well.
Founder Steve Rowe's much-publicized bout with cancer (diagnosed in '96, treated in '97 while the band was on hold) appears to be behind him, as the band continues to prosper in the Christian metal world.

The foundation of the Church’s teaching on mortification is the fact that Jesus Christ, out of love for mankind, voluntarily accepted suffering and death (his “passion”) as the means to redeem the world from sin.
“All theologians agree that mortification is necessary for salvation because man is so strongly inclined to evil by the threefold concupiscence of the world, the flesh, and the devil, which, if not resisted, must lead to grievous sin.
In addition to these mortifications demanded by man’s very condition, the Church, in view of the repeated insistence of the Gospels, imposes other restraints on the faithful.
