Mortification's beginnings were in the Australian Classic Metal band Lightforce in the late eighties.
By the end of 1990 the band decided to change their name to Mortification to better suit the new sound and direction.
In 1991 Mortification signed a record contract to the American christian label Intense Records which is a label under Frontline Records.

Mortification is one of the more prolific Christian thrash/death bands in existance.
Most of their work (particularly the earlier material) is straight-on death metal, but at various times the band has taken more of a traditional thrash approach (for example, Primitive Rhythm Machine), at other times a slower power/thrash feel (notably on Envision Evangeline) and there have been slight hardcore elements scattered throughout as well.
Founder Steve Rowe's much-publicized bout with cancer (diagnosed in '96, treated in '97 while the band was on hold) appears to be behind him, as the band continues to prosper in the Christian metal world.

The band only had a very small budget to work with, which was money they had scraped together and saved from all the live shows they had played and this small amount only allowed them to be able to record and mix eleven songs in a quick and rushed 6 and a half days.
The band played around for a few months as a three piece with Johnny Stoj playing guitar and singing lead vocals, until one day the band received a call from a local singer called Danny Cecati, who said he had heard that the band might be looking for a new lead vocalist.
The band had just got it's biggest break yet and it just seemed that Dave wasn't as committed as the rest of the band for what was ahead, with overseas touring and festival appearances now finally becoming a reality, after all the years of hard work and perserverance.

A lot of the songs were taken from their demo "Break the Curse", but the band tuned their guitars down, and the feel to the songs were way more heavy and doomy than to begin with.
Jayson Sherlock had his last concert with the band at the Blackstump Festival '93, and the concert was releaed both on cd and also VHS under the name "Live Planetarium".

I was the founder of Paramaecium and the band's modern history began in 1991 when we supported Roger Martinez and Mortification (then called Light Force) on an Australian tour.
The album was released independently by the band but following great sales and excellent reviews, it was quickly picked up for US distribution by REX Music, a major Christian label at the time with access to the general market in the US, as well as Witchhunt Records in Switzerland for the European market.
Jason De Ron had already decided to leave the band due to illness and his other interests, but in early 1996 just as the album and novel were about to be released, Chris and Jayson also decided to leave, Chris to pursue other interests and Jayson to forge a career as a multimedia designer.

mortification sounded a bit slow on one song "sorrow" and kicked rear end the rest of the time.
Oh well, this cd is pretty good and fans of the band will probably like it if they keep an open mind or for fans of thrash metal as this is what they have become.
This conception is merely untrue, first of all, because Mortification is a death metal band that flerts with other sounds (like popular, but stupid american 'nu-metal'), but I dont believe that they've ever been a full blooded thrash metal band like Metalica.

Many of today's Christian bands were inspired by this, some even using the song titles as a name for their band.
Blood World is a disc for thrash fans and a must for Mortification fans but is probably not the disc to use to introduce the band to a new listener.
However, the Mortification songs are all from "Blood World" and the Tourniquet songs all from "Vanishing Lessons." The Steve Rowe interview is taken from the "Live Planetarium" video.

Having never really followed the band in the past I found this an interesting couple of hours to spend catching up and learning about them but when it was finished I realized that this is primarily something that is geared to the hard core fan more than the casual listener or newcomer.

The band describes it’s music as "modern metal extremes." Songs like "Drain Dweller" are extremely heavy and bridge a gap between death and thrash, however, those who were expecting "Scrolls Part 2" will be dissapointed.
First off is the clip for the epic 19-minute "Envision Evangelene", and although it is a quality piece of work, it does have it's cheesy moments (sorry guys), in which bad acting on the part of the "cast" is the culprit.
Mortification are currently in the studio recording their new CD, "Hammer of God" at Steve Rowe's Hammer of God Studio in Australia.

Mortification have of course released some more albums after the prior best-of, but the main reason behind this release, was to say goodbye to the fans, I guess.

One idea was to pepper the list with "red herrings" in the form of fake bandnames-- and if someone chose one, we'd ignore their responses later on.
This left us with a set of common band name grammars (popular ones were NNP NNP and NNP #.) We then fed terms from our already collected music text set ('Klepmit') through the grammars again (at the natural probabilities) to make some believable names.
