  Welcome to Snerdville
Storytelling came to Mortimer with some difficulty, and this often frustrated Bergen to the point where the ventriloquist ended the conversation with some variation of the exclamation, "Mortimer, how can you be so stupid?" Mortimer answered this question with a different explanation every episode.
Mortimer's parents got sick of him when he was young, so he moved in with his Grandpa on the farm in Snerdville.
Although Mortimer has never had a girlfriend or even kissed a girl, whenever such things became the topic of conversation, Mortimer would substitute the closest thing he had: his dear and favorite cow, Bessie, who lives on the farm with him.

Re: "well, duh!" - informal linguistic accuracy
While Charlie was a wise-cracking cosmopolitan, and dressed the part, Snerd was a rustic bumpkin, dressed as the hayseed that he was.
Thus, when someone nowadays says "Duh" they are evoking Mortimer Snerd, for whom nothing was ever obvious, and who therefore stated the obvious as though it were a revelation (which to him it was).
If there is someone out there who is old enough to have heard Snerd, I would be glad to hear his or her confirmation or denial of my brief explanation of this expression.

 Mortimer - a definition from Whatis.com
A Mortimer is a person who knows a lot about computers or the Internet but would rather ridicule those who know less than share some knowledge.
The term is derived from the name of a certain famous wooden dummy whose last name was the compound of "snooty" and "nerd".
Mortimer Snerd himself, creation of Edgar Bergen and colleague of Charlie McCarthy, would never have been considered snooty, a nerd, or (in this context) a Mortimer.
