Dee was born in Tower Ward, London of a Welsh family, the surname deriving from the Welsh du ("fl").
From the 1550s through the 1570s, he served as an advisor to England's voyages of discovery, providing technical assistance in navigation and ideological backing for the creation of a British Empire (Dee was the first to use the term).
His personal library at Mortlake was the largest in the country, and was considered one of the finest in Europe, perhaps second only to that of de Thou.

I love living in Mortlake, I've been here over a year and eat out a lot and haven't even got close to eating in all the restaurants; pluses are the parks [esp Richmond], river, pubs, supermarkets, a brilliant butcher!
Mortlake comes under the borough of Richmond, so it's a bit on the pricey side.

The failure of Dee's calendar reform proposal would mean that England retained a calendar at odds with that in the rest of Europe until 1752.
On the other hand Dee, still in severe financial problems, returned to Mortlake in December 1589 to discover that much of his library had been stolen, as were his scientific instruments.
