Appearing in 1963, it was the product of an effort spearheaded by musique concrète composer Morton Subotnick.
In 1962, working with a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation, Subotnick and business partner Ramon Sender hired electrical engineer Don Buchla to build a "fl box" for composition.
