 Australasian Gannet
Birds soar 10 m or more above the surface of the water, herding fish into dense shoals, then fold their wings back and dive into the water to catch their prey.
The fish are grasped with the aid of small backward-pointing serrations along the edges of the bill.
A bird only stays under the water for about ten seconds, but the fish is normally swallowed before the bird reaches the surface.

Do dietary changes of Australasian gannets (Morus serrator) reflect variability in pelagic fish stocks?
The relationship between changes in the diet of Australasian gannets (Morus serrator) and commercial fisheries landings was investigated.
The contribution of pilchard (Sardinops sagax) to the diet of gannets was significantly related to the commercial catch of that species, suggesting that changes in the relative proportion of pilchard in the diet of gannets may be a useful index of pilchard abundance and availability.

When I lived in England I worked for Fisheries Research and saw many Northern Gannets Morus bassanus at sea and watched them plunge-diving into the sea after fish.
Here in Australia, the Australian Gannet Morus serrator is very like the Northern Gannet and I have also watched with delight them diving for fish in the same spectacular way.
I have long wanted to see the tropical cousins of the Gannets, the Boobys, but my previous visits to the tropics never gave me much chance to see much of the seabirds.
