The historical selection of Moruya for these institutions arises partly from the fact that Moruya lies near the geographical centre of the Eurobodalla Shire, which runs from Batemans Bay in the north to Tilba in the south and also because Moruya is one of the older towns in the region.
Moruya Heads, for example, is only about 10 kms to the east and boasts beautiful views north along the coast and west over the estuary of the Moruya River, called the Deua in its upper reaches, to the spectacular mountains of the Eastern Escarpment.
Also close to Moruya are the beautiful beaches and villages at Tomakin and Broulee to the north and Moruya Heads, Congo and Bingi to the south and east.

Although a few Europeans had passed through the Moruya area since the arrival of the first fleet in 1788, the first examination of the district was by Assistant Surveyor Florance in 1827.
Moruya town was established in 1850 as an administrative centre for the district.
Moruya’s greatest prosperity came in the 1880s and 1890s, when the declining goldfields combined with timber getting and farming to bring wealth the town.

Situated 306 km south of Sydney via the Princes Highway Moruya (population 2520) is a coastal town reliant upon timber, dairying, cattle, vegetables, fish, oysters and tourism for its sustenance.
In 1859 the court was relocated, building and all, to Moruya, where it remained until the present courthouse was constructed in 1879.
The first bridge across the Moruya River was erected in 1876 though the havoc wreaked by frequent flooding saw new bridges erected in 1900 and 1945 and, most recently, in 1966.

It was an opportunity for students at Moruya High to showcase their musical talents to the rest of the school.
Moruya High School won that debate to win the zone final and progress to the regional carnival held in Bateman’s Bay.
A team of 22 students from Moruya High School represented the Eurobodalla at the Regional Cross Country which was held in Cambewarra on the 10th June.

The township of Moruya was surveyed in 1850 although settlers had been in the area since Francis Flanagan arrived in 1829.
Shipbuilding was one of the early industries and the town grew as hopeful prospectors passed through the port of Moruya in the 1850s on their way to the booming goldfields of Braidwood, Araluen and Mogo.
The town's history and the history of the district and the gold period at Mogo is preserved at the Moruya Museum in Campbell Street.
