Morwenstow village, near the high, wild great cliffs on the coast, is perhaps best known for its vicar/poet Robert Stephen Hawker.
Morwenstow Vicarage with its unique chimneys modeled on church towers that had a special meaning for him, was the home of Rev RS Hawker.

 The Caledonia (brig) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Caledonia was a brig of some two hundred tons, built in Arbroath, Scotland and wrecked on September 7, 1843.
The Caledonia was wrecked off Sharpinose Point, near Morwenstow, Cornwall while on journey from Constantinople to Bristol.
He was taken to the local Rectory where the Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker ensured that he was cared for and nursed back to health.

He was ordained a priest in 1831, and was more than happy when the Bishop of Exeter offered him the rectorship in 1834 of Morwenstow Church.
When Hawker arrived at Morwenstow there had not been a vicar in there for over a hundred years.
He built himself the remarkable Morwenstow Vicarage, with chimneys that looked like the towers of the churches in his life: Tamerton, where he had been curate; Morwenstow, his other living of Wellcombe; plus that of Magdalen College, Oxford.

The Church was most likely built on an earlier site of religious worship, there is strong evidence of occupation of the area back to the stone age, and a bronze axe head was found in West Youlstone and a hill fort was located in the area of Stanbury Manor.
Robert was a graduate of Oxford, He took his degree in 1828 and Church of England orders in 1831, after serving as a curate at North Tamerton in Cornwall, he was appointed, in 1834, vicar of Morwenstow, a parish with a dangerous rocky coast.
Here until his death he lived an active life as the pastor of a sea-faring-farming population, and gave liberally of his means to the parish.

For example, Hawker insisted that sailors drowned in shipwrecks near Morwenstow received a Christian burial, rather than being summarily buried on the beach where they were found.
He returned to his old habit of smoking opium, and according to accounts he predicted that it would not be long before he rested in Morwenstow churchyard.

The Rev. Robert Stephen Hawker was appointed vicar of Morwenstow Church in 1834 and served the parish for some 40 years.
Something of an eccentric,"Parson"Hawker, as he was known to his parishioners kept a huge pig as a pet and would sit writing his poems in a small hut he had constructed of driftwood overlooking the mighty Atlantic Ocean.The hut is now preserved by the National Trust and stands about 1 mile from the impressive Church.
Hawker changed all that,organising burial parties and fortifying his men with gin for their unpleasant task.At the entrance to Morwenstow churchyard stands the figurehead of the ship "caledonia" which foundered in September 1842.

He warned that if the parish could not find a way to preserve its history then it would soon be too late.
The inaugural meeting took place at St Mark's School on Wednesday 23rd September 1981 when it was decided to hold meetings on the first Friday of each month (since changed to the third Friday of each month).

It was tough going back along the coast to Morwenstow, not just because of the four 3-400 foot climbs but also because of the wind gusting to 50 mph, fortunately coming off the sea.

A drink along the way at the unusual Bush Inn at Morwenstow (no food that day); and the Rectory Farm Tea Rooms were closed for the winter.
