Moschus states, that Bion left his native country and spent the last years of his life in Sicily, cultivating bucolic poetry, the natural growth of that island.
Their style is very refined, the sentiments soft and sentimental, and his versification (he uses the hexameter exclusively) is very fluent and elegant.
In the invention and management of his subjects he is superior to Moschus, but in strength and depth of feeling, and in the truthfulness of his sentiments,) he is much inferior to Theocritus.

HARVEY: Review - William Dalrymple, From the Holy Mountain: A Journey among the Christians of the Middle East
Much enarmored of Moschus' adventures and descriptions from his journey through the monasteries of the eastern Roman Empire, Dalrymple decided to replicate that journey in 1994, retracing Moschus' route as closely as possible.
Moschus, travelling with his younger friend and disciple Sophronius, witnessed the crumbling of the eastern empire in its final years of Byzantine rule as war with Persia raged throughout the eastern territories.
Moschus himself died in 619, but Sophronius was subsequently consecrated patriarch of Jerusalem; as such, he witnessed the Muslim conquest and indeed, would himself hand over the keys of the city in 638 to the conquering Caliph Omar at the end of a long and brutal siege.

The idyls of Moschus were at first intermixed with those of Theocritus, and one or two of those ascribed to Theocritus have been, though without sufficient reason, supposed to be the productions of Moschus, as, for example, the 20th and 28th.
To judge from the pieces which are extant, Moschus was capable of writing with elegance and liveliness; but he is inferior to Bion, and comes still farther behind Theocritus.

Moschus even began the poem telling the woodland glades, Dorian water, rivers, green things, etc (243S) to mourn him just because he was a beautiful singer.
Moschus should stop exaggerating and present his feelings in a more down-to-earth, believable fashion.
Moschus, though, gave us no such story of Bion and did not give us any idea as to why everyone and everything must mourn him, which I did not particularly appreciate.

Similar influences can be seen all throughout Moschus’s Idyl II: The Lament for Bion, since the entire poem is centered around mourning another poet.
Moschus attributes his own grief to the gods, the muses, cities, and all of nature.
Moschus describes this mourning in great detail by listing who and what is involved: “Echo in the rocks,” “the trees cast down their fruit, and all the flowers have faded,” “the grey sea-waves,” and so on (Moschus, CA 816).

But it known that there are three Bucolic poets: this Theocritus, Moschus of Sicily, and Bion of Smyrna, from a village called Phlossa.
They are the birds that shun the boy fowler, in Bion's poem, and perch uncalled (as in a bronze in the Uffizi) on the grown man. In one or other of the sixteen Pompeian pictures of Venus and Adonis, the Loves are breaking their bows and arrows for grief, as in the hymn of Bion.
He was to add minute pictorial touches, as in the description of Alcmena's waking when the serpents attacked her child,--a passage rich in domestic pathos and incident which contrast strongly with Pindar's bare narrative of the same events.

Petronius seems to have been amazingly familiar with the literary tradition.
