Moscow was the fourth capital of Russia--the earlier ones being Novgorod, Kieff, and Vladimir--and was the residence of the Tsars from 1340 until the time of Peter the Great in 1711.
Moscow was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1547; in 1571 it was besieged and taken by Devlet-Ghirei, Khan of the Crimean Tatars, and again in 1591 the Tatars and Mongols under Kara-Ghirei for the last time entered and plundered the city, but did not succeed in taking the Kremlin.
Returning to Russia, he arrived at Moscow in the spring of 1441, and celebrated a grand pontifical liturgy at the cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin in the presence of Grand Duke Vasili II and the Russian clergy and nobility.

 Moscow Mountain Plants
Moscow Mountain, at nearly 5000 feet in elevation, and the two peaks, East and West Twin, at nearly 4500 feet, on the ridge to the west, stand well above the town of Moscow, which has an elevation of about 2600 feet.
The forests of Moscow Mountain are among the closest to and most easily accessible from Washington State University.
The forests of the south slope are dominated by ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa).

 LCHS McConnell Mansion
William J. McConnell came to Moscow from Yamhill, Oregon, in 1878 at the age of 40 after a career of gold mining in the Boise Basin.
Moving to Moscow in 1878, McConnell's mercantile business prospered so much so that he acquired the title, "Merchant Prince of Idaho." After the house which we now call the McConnell Mansion was completed in 1886, McConnell's wife and four children joined him in Moscow that Christmas Eve.
Although McConnell became the state's leading Republican, serving as state senator and governor, and despite securing the University of Idaho for Moscow, he fell into obscurity after losing his money in the Depression of 1893.

Russia’s forests are of global significance because of their size, carbon-storage capacity, biodiversity, as well as the magnitude of their timber and non-timber products.
Given the recent governmental changes in Russia, the timing of the project is excellent: there is currently a strategic window of opportunity to develop new participatory approaches to forest management and conservation, which could then be used as models for replication throughout other natural resource management sectors in the future.
The establishment of a framework for the sustainable use of Russia's forests is envisaged through stakeholder and public involvement.
