''Moscow on the Hudson'' contains one extremely funny sequence, when, after what has been an extended prologue set in the Moscow that's on the Moscow River, Vladimir decides to chuck everything and to remain in New York just as his circus colleagues are boarding the bus that will take them to the plane.
Defection and exile are large subjects, but ''Moscow on the Hudson'' realizes little of the profound drama and comedy that are so poignantly defined in even a small movie like ''Musical Passage,'' Jim Brown's documentary about the members of the Soviet Emigre Orchestra.

For many years, I counted Moscow on the Hudson as my favorite film and if you like to be mildy entertained while considering what it means to be free in the USA, you may also love this thoughtful comedy.
"Moscow on the Hudson" is not a perfect movie, but it's definitely a more thoughtful, intelligent movie than you might otherwise expect.
The story is a rollercoaster of moments which reflect the American experience seen through the eyes of someone thrust suddenly in the middle of it all, in the place where it is at its most insane and most wonderful: New York City.

DVD Review: Moscow on the Hudson
"Moscow on the Hudson" seems like the "lost" Robin Williams movie.
"Moscow on the Hudson" does occasionally drag as it feels stretched at nearly two hours, but I will say that at least Mazursky resisted the temptation to highlight the comedic elements more, which would have taken away from the picture.
Final Thoughts: "Moscow On The Hudson" has some slow moments, but I really think Robin Williams gives one of his better performances - and that keeps this enjoyable dramatic comedy working as well as it does.

I thought of some of those experiences while I was watching Paul Mazursky's MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON, a wonderful movie about a man who defects to the United States.
The movie opens with his life in Moscow, a city of overcrowded apartments, bureaucratic red tape, long lines for consumer goods, secret pleasures like jazz records, and shortages so acute that toilet paper has turned into a currency of its own.
MOSCOW ON THE HUDSON is the kind of movie that Paul Mazursky does especially well.
