Birmingham's historic Moseley Bog, the inspiration for JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, is to get a major revamp and be put under control of the Wildlife Trust.
It was while living near Moseley Bog that he enjoyed many childhood adventures in the woodland, feeding his imagination for his later writing.
The Bog is recalled in his description of the Old Forest in The Lord of the Rings.

Moseley borders on Kings Heath and is close to Cannon Hill Park.
Moseley Village, still known as 'the village' because it used to be a village on the outskirts of Birmingham, is home to the Moseley Dovecote which can be found by Moseley Hall Hospital on the Alcester Road.
Moseley is well served with parks and the MAC centre at Cannon Hill Park is well worth a visit.

SWANSHURST POOL (Grove, Moseley New, Swanshurst Slade Pool) was made in or before 1759 by Henry Giles as a fishpond : he constructed an earth dam across the small but relatively deep valley of a tiny brook which used to rise near the top of Brook Lane.
The name 'Moseley' is incorrect : it was applied to several sites on the west side of Swanshurst Quarter in Yardley, probably because they were the property of the Moseley family of Grevis.
Moseley Golf Course acquired part of the lakeside in 1892 and the rest between 1902 and '19.

Moseley Bog and Joy's Wood lie approximately 3 miles south of Birmingham City Centre, situated between Sparkhill and Billesley, Hall Green and Moseley or between Yardley Wood Road and Wake Green Road
The land comprising Moseley Bog and Joy's Wood was declared a Local Nature Reserve by the council on 17 July 1991.
The area known as Moseley Bog is made up of both wet and dry woodland together with patches of fen vegetation which has developed on the site of an old millpond.

Moseley Bog is a nature reserve in the Moseley area of Birmingham in England, at grid reference SP092821.
Much of the area comprising Moseley Bog was declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in 1980.
There are also burnt mounds in the banks of the Coldbath Brook, which, with their surrounding areas, are Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

 Sarehole
This pond, in a dell, is at the end of Moseley Bog near to Gracewell Road.
Moseley Bog is now administred by the Birmingham Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve.
The entrance into Moseley Bog is not easy to find (it's hard to find your way in and out!), but the helpful staff at the Sarehole Mill (see below) will give visitors a free map showing the entrance and paths.

Moseley Bog is the wooden Dell that Tolkien is referring to where the brothers would come, play and pick mushrooms in the field they passed through to reach the Dell.
The farmer who owned the land where the boys picked the mushrooms would chase the boys, steal their shoes when they paddled in the brook and beat them when they went to get them back.

The bog was an ideal place for Tolkien´s childhood adventures.
