Moses - master of all prophets, most trusted in God's universe, most humble of men - was denied the cherished goal of entering the Land of Israel because he hit the stone and chastised the people (Numbers 20:7-13).
There are many differing explanations of this mistake; the commentators themselves find it hard to explain how Moses' deed and words were serious enough to merit so severe a punishment.
Any understanding of the sin of Moses, as of any of the ancients, requires a realization that they were so great that their actions were measured by standards far above our own.

 UNIVERSAL TORAH: KORACH
While assimilation had its theorists and exponents (from Moses Mendelson onwards), what gave it such power and influence was the fact that it was sponsored by a clique of extremely wealthy Jewish sponsors (= Korach) who were themselves in flight from the Torah of Moses.
In the Five Books of Moses, the prime sanction that is threatened for disobedience against the Torah is not hell, but rather the tribulations of This World (as in the curses in Leviticus chapter 26 and in Deuteronomy chapter 28).
The account of Korach's challenge to Moses and Aaron is followed by the laws relating to the sacrificial parts and Terumah (gifts of grain, oil, wine and other produce) given to the priests in return for their service in the Sanctuary, and the tithes which the Levites received in return for theirs.

Hebrew in the eras of Moses through the time of Solomon's Temple was changed to new "Assyrian lettering" (ktav ashurit) by Ezra the Scribe following the Babylonian Exile, and probably there were changes in verbal pronounciation as well.
Until then, most Jews had spoken Hebrew in Israel and Judea, however, by the destruction of the Second Temple, most had already shifted to speaking Aramaic, with a significant number in the large diaspora speaking Greek.
There were the heads of the original Hebrew tribes, and then also prophets such as Moses and Jeremiah whose words still as reference points for Bible-believers, judges such as Samuel and Samson, kings such as David and Solomon, priests of the Temple in Jerusalem, and the Sanhedrin which was the judiciary.
