MOSHE ARENS: Yes, which was based on the belief, very worthy but maybe a little naive, that you could reach a permanent settlement within a matter of weeks with Yasser Arafat.
MOSHE ARENS: Well, we have a deadline by which a time a coalition has to be established.
MOSHE ARENS: I think generally when you operate on the basis of illusions when you're not realistic about the problems that you face, when you don't want to recognize that there is a gap that at the moment cannot be bridged, then you're chasing the rainbow.

Moshe Arens (born December 27, 1925 in Kaunas, Lithuania) is an Israeli politician.
In 1948, when Israel achieved its independence and began fighting wars with the Arabs, Arens immigrated to Israel and became a right-wing activist, joining the Irgun forces, which were led by Menachem Begin, a man who he would work with much in his political career.
Arens then retired from politics until 1999, when he challenged his protege Benjamin Netanyahu for leadership of Likud.

MOSHE ARENS: Well, the April incursions also brought down the level of violence for a certain period of time but see now it's recurring; we've taken very bad losses these last two days and there is really no alternative to going in there and getting them.
MOSHE ARENS: Well, first of all it's going to take a while, I think maybe something like a year before the fence is completed so we're not going to hold our breath and continue to take casualties during the year, we'd better fix the problem before that fence gets completed.

 Moshe Arens
Arens, who served as Israel's Foreign Minister from 1988-1990 and as its Defense Minister from 1990-1992, accuses President Bush and former Secretary of State James Baker of engineering a number of government crises in Israel that eventually contributed to the 1992 downfall of the conservative Likud government led by Yitzhak Shamir.
Arens reveals how the Bush administration used the threat of withholding the guarantee as a means of discrediting the Likud government and of unduly influencing the peace process.
Moshe Arens served as Israel's Ambassador to Washington from 1982 to 1983, and as a member of the Israeli government from 1983 to 1992.

Arens, a Likud member of the Knesset, said he is skeptical about the plan because Saudi Arabia - which he called an "autocratic regime" - did not contact Israel directly to gauge its reaction.
In any case, Arens said, Israel should not agree to relinquish the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights as a precondition for talks and normalized relations with the Arabs.
Arens would not speculate whether the plan is a public relations ploy designed to burnish Saudi Arabia's image since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Arens concluded in August 2002 that in the immediate future, "the [missile] threat that Israel most likely will have to contend with" is that of Syria.
The Syrians could mount on them the same biological or chemical warheads as the Iraqis, with one important difference: Iraq had to reduce the size of its warheads in order to extend the range of its missiles; thus, the quantities of non-conventional material that could be delivered by the Syrian missile forces was considerably greater.

Arens refused to say whether he would back Netanyahu for head of the Likud party, saying that primary elections are still a way off.
Another factor mitigating against a split, according to Arens, is the large majority in the party that opposes the disengagement plan.
