Moshoeshoe II returned from exile in 1992 as an ordinary citizen.
One of the conditions put forward by the King for the return of the BCP government was that his father should be re-installed as head of state.
After protracted negotiations, the BCP government was reinstated and the King abdicated in favor of his father in 1995, but Moshoeshoe II died in a car accident in 1996 and was again succeeded by his son, Letsie III.

Moshoeshoe (1786?-1870) was born at Menkhoaneng in the Northern part of present-day (A landlocked constitutional monarchy in southern Africa; achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1966) Lesotho.
Moshoeshoe’s reign coincided with the growth in power of the well-known (A member of the tall Negroid people of southeast Africa living in northern Natal) Zulu king, (Click link for more info and facts about Shaka) Shaka.
However, the British pulled out of the region in 1854, causing the de facto formation of two independent states: the Boer (A province in central South Africa that was colonized by the Boers; named Free State in 1997) Orange Free State and the Sotho Kingdom.

After the Afrikaners attacked (1865), he won protectorate status from Britain in 1868, maintaining the autonomy of the 125,000 Sotho.
