Mosiah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mosiah was the king of the Nephite nation from about 124 BC to 91 BC according to the Book of Mormon.
Mosiah instituted a new governing system on his deathbed after all of his sons refused to succeed him.
After Mosiah's death in approximately 91 BC, a council of elected judges governed the land until Christ appeared (see Mosiah 29).

Mosiah 9:9 9 And we began to till the ground, yea, even with all manner of seeds, with seeds of corn, and of wheat, and of barley, and with neas, and with sheum, and with seeds of all manner of fruits; and we did begin to multiply and prosper in the land.
Mosiah 14:7 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb so he opened not his mouth.
Mosiah 26:6 6 For it came to pass that they did deceive many with their flattering words, who were in the church, and did cause them to commit many sins; therefore it became expedient that those who committed sin, that were in the church, should be admonished by the church.

Mosiah 28:1 the sons of Mosiah…desired…that they might impart the word of God to their brethren, the Lamanites
Mosiah apparently told his sons of this promise because this was a source of strength for Ammon who later stood against those who had scattered the flocks of the king.
Mosiah, as king, declined judgment to Alma who was apparently the presiding authority for the churches (Mosiah 26:12).
Thus, Mosiah was the king, prophet, and seer, and Alma was the prophet to whom was given administrative stewardship over the church.

 Mosiah 29
Mosiah used Benjamin as the benchmark for the good king, and one of the reasons for Benjamin’s covenant was to eliminate “contentions.” The particular “contentions” that had arisen were economic in nature, and dealt with the exaltation of one person over another.
In the context of the renunciation of kingship, Mosiah’s suggestion about the voice of the people is not that they have a democracy, but that the judges would use the voice of the people as their measuring stick for right or wrong.
Mosiah is probably attempting to remedy that inequality as well as the unequal punishment of people and king (where the people are punished for the sins of the king).

Book of Mormon Nuggets: Mosiah and Ether
But In Mosiah 29, as King Mosiah does away with the monarchy, he makes a variety of statements that show he has carefully studied and learned from the story of the Jaredites, though he does not say so explicitly.
For example, Mosiah notes that his eldest son had declined the kingdom, and that there was the risk of contention in selecting a new king: "And now, if there should be another appointed in his stead, behold I fear that there would rise contentions among you.
Mosiah also warned that the wickedness of King Noah brought bondage to the people (Mosiah 29:18-19), a common theme in the Book of Ether (see Ether 6:22-23, as well as the examples of kings conquered by family members to serve in captivity in Ether 7:5,7,17; 8:3-4; 10:14-15,30-31; 11:9, 18-19, 23; 13:23).

Mosiah was certainly not without his personal trials, for Mosiah went through that special suffering known only to the parents of disobedient children.
Mosiah also faced the challenges of leading a multigroup society: Nephites, Zoramites, Mulekites, Nehorites, Limhites (in Gideon), as well as those covenanters in Alma's group.
The political leader as a teacher of his people: King Benjamin and King Mosiah are examples of the leader-servant; they followed the pattern of their master, Jesus.

Benjamin or Mosiah? Resolving an Anomaly in Mosiah 21:28
In the book of Mosiah, chapter 21, verse 28, it is declared that "King Mosiah had a gift from God"; but in the original edition of the book, the name of the king was Benjamin--an oversight which thoughtful Mormon scribes corrected.
Probably not, for though it is certain that Mosiah kept the records in question, it is by no means certain that his father, Benjamin, did not also have a share in keeping them.
Nibley is also correct in noting that Mosiah was not the only record keeper, an appropriate and accurate statement relative to Ether 4:1 since it is record keeping that is the topic under discussion in Ether 4.

King Benjamin or Mosiah: A Look at Mosiah 21:28
In the book of Mosiah, chapter 21, verse 28, it is declared that "King Mosiah had a gift from God"; but in the original edition of the book, the name of the king was Benjamin - an oversight which thoughtful Mormon scribes corrected.
For example, the 1830 edition of Mosiah 21:28 refers to King Benjamin while modern editions read "King Mosiah." According to Mormon chronology, Benjamin was dead and so no longer king at this point (Mosiah 6:3-7; 7:1), so the divinely inspired name was changed to King Mosiah to cover the error.
In contrast, while Mosiah 8 is a direct quote, the Mosiah 21 account is a narrative history and as Norwood points out, is part of a Zeniffite record, which is included in our book of Mosiah.
