The Mossbauer gamma ray has a finite spread in energy, which is quantified by a linewidth, defined as the full width at half maximum intensity and related to the lifetime of the nuclear excited state.

In general, the mossbauer effect is optimised for low-energy gamma rays associated with nuclei strongly bound in a crystal lattice a low temperatures.

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a spectroscopic technique based on the Mössbauer effect.
In its most common form, Mössbauer Absorption Spectroscopy, a solid sample is exposed to a beam of gamma radiation, and a detector measures the intensity of the beam that is transmitted through the sample.
The gamma-ray energy is varied by accelerating the gamma-ray source through a range of velocities with a linear motor.

Mossbauer during his graduate work at Heidelberg in 1957.

Measurements were performed at 4.2 K as well as at variable temperatures ranging from 10 to 300 K. In the case of beta-Mn(Sn) solid solutions additionally Mössbauer spectra were measured at 4.2 K in an applied magnetic field.
The investigation of epsilon-Mn(Sn) hydrides with hydrogen-to-metal ratios 0.8 < x < 1.0 by Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that these are magnetically ordered up to above 300 K and that there is a phase boundary between differently magnetically ordered states in the range 0.90 < x < 0.93.
In both magnetic structures there are two magnetically inequivalent lattice sites, the multiplicities of which are 1:3 for x < 0.90 and 1:1 for x > 0.93.
