  Mossberg 590
Mossberg claims that the Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot".
Mossberg sells a wide variety of accessory stocks and barrels, allowing many configurations to be made (including, in the past, a bullpup configured model 500).
Mossberg has also sold "combination" sets, with a single receiver and more than one barrel; common examples included a 28 inch field barrel packaged with an 18 1/2 inch cylinder bore barrel for defensive use, or a field barrel and a slug barrel, or a slug barrel and a.50 caliber muzzleloading rifle barrel.

 Mossberg 500 Resource Page - mossberg 590
The Mossberg 500 is a shotgun manufactured by O.F. Mossberg and Sons, Inc. Rather than a single model, the 500 is really a series of widely varying hammerless, pump action, repeaters, all of which share the same basic receiver and action, but differ in bore size, barrel length, choke options, and stock and forearm materials.
Model 590 magazines are open at the end, and the barrels fit around the magazine tube and are held on by a nut at the end.
The Model 590 Compact, which is only available to law enforcement and military buyers, is also available with a 14 inch barrel, which is flush with the end of the six shot Model 590 magazine tube.

Mossberg 500s and 590s are typically marketed as the "one pump action shotgun...heavy duty enough to pass...Mil-Spec 3443E, a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot".
We settled for a 590 Special Purpose equipped the same way as the 590A1 we had hoped for; the gun we wound up with is the same as a 590A1 with the exception that it has a plastic trigger guard/safety and a lighter profile barrel.
The first major difference between the 870 and the 590 is in the selection of materials for the receiver; steel in the case of the 870 and anodized aluminum in the case of the mossberg.

But because the safety on the Mossberg is actuated with the thumb, you are able to manipulate the safety without moving your trigger finger from the indexed position along the side of the triggerguard.
If you are using a Mossberg, flicking the safety off before (or while) arming the shotgun is done with the dominant thumb and the trigger finger can stay in the indexed position until you are ready to fire -- all it needs to do is to move to the trigger and press.

It sounds as though the difference in quality between Remington and Mossberg is not that great: apparently it's more of a personal preference on the order of HK vs. Glock rather than good quality vs. mediocre.

 mossberg 590 V. 500? - 1911Forum
590 is kickass, I saw it at a gun show a few weeks ago and wished I didn't have an 870.
I have to say that for combat or home defense, the added magazine capacity of the 590 seems to be a better deal.
I'll agree the 590 is better, but I have a 500 I bought eons ago that was a package- 28"VR barrel (fer sportin' use), wood stock and forearm, but also a 18.5" CB barrel and pistol grip.

View topic - Remington 870 or Mossberg 590?
The shotgun part is a tough call for me. I have always been a fan of Mossberg, I have shot them, in both a tactical setup, and in a sport/hunting setup.
The truth is yes mossberg did pass that test but what they didn`t tell you was remington passed it as well.
Good supply of "tactical" accessories for both, but you may have to look a little harder for the 590 as there are a lot more 870's out there and retailers therefore tend to give it more inventory room.
