		I like the synthetic furniture - I have a problem with wooden furniture for pump-actions because the cross-section of the piece on the pump has to be so thin - it has to be more fragile than the synthetic piece.
		But if you wanted a seriously compact shotgun, the 5-shot Mossberg 500 with the 18 inch barrel and a pistol grip is so small, I can slide it up the sleeve of my jersey and you would not know I was carrying.

		I'd rather be comfy on that (fast) cruise to Denver than to be able to scale a cliff that I could drive around if the going gets too tough.
		Even worse of me is to not mention any of the fantastic sub-compact 1911 options that are popping up all over the place… The Ultra Compacts from Springfield, Kimber, Para… you gotta be kidding me! They are all exceptional choices, but for the sake of making an interesting list… I excluded them.
		The Mossberg 590 remains my absolute favorite shotgun system provided it is fixed with 2 things.

		I love my Mossberg 590, but be aware that the safety is not only different from other shotguns, but different from just about any gun.
		Unless you got a “Cruiser,” and I always wondered why they called that thing a “590” (500 series 9-shot), since it only holds 5 rounds.

		In my opinion, a short-barreled 20 or 12 gauge shotgun is the top choice as a home defense gun for most people.
		Other good choices in pump-action shotguns include the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 and 590.
		Another type of shotgun that can work well in a home defense situation is a short-barreled double shotgun.
