Pitt's Fitzgerald is college football's most outstanding player   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Of course, I was most familiar with Fitzgerald and his spectacular plays, but I caught a few highlights of the other guys, read about them and checked their stats from time to time.
I decided to categorize and rank the top players in different ways, and by around Thanksgiving I came up with this: Manning was the most valuable player to his team; White was the main cog on the best team; Fitzgerald was the most skilled.
My instinct told me Fitzgerald was the most outstanding player because of his incredible body control, sense of where the ball is and ability to consistently beat one or more defenders to complete a play.
