The University of Manchester's Field Archaeology Centre is to continue its successful 'Dig Manchester' project, which gives local communities the opportunity to sample archaeology in their own area, after receiving £500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
Robina McNeil, director of the Greater Manchester Archaeology Unit commented: "The idea was to involve the local community from school children to senior citizens in a local dig, to not only uncover some history, but to bring about a sense of community and pride.
Manchester City Council is leading the project in conjunction with The University of Manchester, Manchester Museum, North Manchester Regeneration Partnership, Wythenshawe Regeneration Partnership and Moston & District Archaeology & Social History Group (MADASH).

Moston Vale was chosen as one site in a unique £23 million scheme known as Newlands to reclaim large areas of derelict and neglected land across the North West, transforming them into open green spaces for the local community.
Moston Vale was until the late 1950’s a highly active mining site providing employment for much of the local community in Moston, and a playground for the local children.
Upon the closure of the landfill the area was landscaped and planted with trees.

In the end Moston Brook AFC ran out 2-1 winners with goals from Jordan Keeling and Jonathan Fogerty, bringing the trophy to Manchester for the first time in the competitions history!
Although Moston Brook did not give one of their better performances, they showed a lot of character and determination to defeat a very well organised and talented BAC/EE Preston team, who were very sporting and gracious in defeat.
The Moston Brook defence were rudely awoken by a ball that allowed Preston’s quick striker to accelerate clear down the right side of the defence and calmly slot home the first goal (0-1).

Keith Billingsley, of Chauncy Road, Moston, died from multiple injuries suffered in the incident on Monday.
