Wagtail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The wagtails are a group of small passerine birds with long tails which they wag frequently.
Motacilla, the root of the family and main generic name, means moving tail.
Wagtails are slender, often colourful, ground-feeding insectivores of open country in the Old World.

Pied wagtail - Motacilla alba : More Information - ARKive
The pied wagtail is instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive fl and white plumage, loud tsli-vitt call, and characteristic habit of constantly bobbing the tail, hence the common name ‘wagtail’ (5) (2).
The pied wagtail (Motacilla alba yarrellii) is a subspecies that occurs in Britain.
It differs from subspecies alba, which occurs on the continent and is known as the white wagtail, in that during the breeding season, males develop fl upperparts and females have sooty dark grey upperparts (2).

Submission No:250   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
This case relates to a claim of a White Wagtail Motacilla alba observed on the Durak River at Jack's Water Hole, WA (15 0 14' S - 127 0 53' E) on the 17th October 1997.
The tail movement was noted to be in a somewhat vertical plane as distinct from the usual side to side motion (as in Willie Wagtail Rhipidura leucophrys).
The observer was 100% confident with the identification as Motacilla alba of the race leucopsis and he may be correct.

Motacilla citreola also is paraphyletic, consisting of two species-level groups.
The Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava) is widely distributed throughout the Old World and has colonized Alaska in the New World (Cramp 1988).
Motacilla flava and M. citreola specimens were collected during the breeding season.

 Submission No:364
Initially the bird was assumed to be a Magpie Lark, but the unusual behaviour and long tail identified it as a motacilla wagtail.
After the initial sighting the bird was briefly relocated but was flushed by a passing jogger and subsequent searches failed to find the bird.
Subsequent research confirmed the identity as a White Wagtail Motacilla alba of the race leucopsis most probably a male in full breeding plumage.

RedOrbit NEWS | Phylogeographic patterns in motacilla flava and motacilla citreola: Species limits and population ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Mitochondrial origin of DNA was supported by sequencing disparate regions, absence of stop codons, and the existence of a large number of haplotypes, all of which are inconsistent with nuclear copies (Zhang and Hewitt 1996).
There was no phylogeographic structure in haplotype trees (not shown) for the eastern or western groups of M. citreola, but two individuals (31 Tyva and 11 Mong) were basal to a polytomy of eastern haplotypes.
If recognized as species, the name Motacilla flava applies to western forms, the northeastern group becomes Motacilla tschutschensis (Gmelin 1789), and the southeastern group is Motacilla taivana (Swinhoe 1863).

A further use of molecular phylogenies is that they provide us with the ability to trace the evolution of morphological characters or behaviors.

It remained throughout the afternoon, when I took these photos, and was observed by 20 or more birders at close range.

I use morphological, vocal, molecular, behavioural, ecological and distributional data to re-evaluate the systematics of three passerine bird groups, the Mirafraassamica complex (bush-larks), the genus Seicercus ("spectacled-warblers"; with emphasis on the the S.
Two new species are described: Seicercus soror and Motacilla samveasnae.
The phylogenetic study of the genus Motacilla reveals incongruence between mitochondrial DNA, nuclear DNA and non-molecular data.

Theses from Uppsala University : 1426 - Effects of Post-Glacial Range Expansions and Population Bottlenecks on Species ...
The proposed mechanism is that males become less attractive to females by losing certain secondary sexual traits during population bottlenecks, and that females shift their preferences towards other male traits.
Support for this mode of speciation is found in the widespread bird genus Motacilla (wagtails).
This genus is characterised by extensive plumage variation and contains a large number of widely distributed taxa in the northern parts of its distribution.

Anders Ödeen, Animal ecology EBC, UU
My main research interest is speciation processes in laboratory and natural populations with special reference to the Yellow Wagtail complex (Motacilla flava), and the distribution, plumage morphology, and phylogeny of its races.
My interest for the wagtails (genus Motacilla) also concerns the systematics and phylogeography of the white wagtail (Motacilla alba) and its closest relatives, the African pied wagtail (M.aguimp), Japanese wagtail (M. grandis), and the Indian large pied wagtail (M. maderaspatensis).
My focus here is mainly on the perceptional and evolutionary significance of plumage-vision interactions.
