 VH1.com : Danzig : Biography
The band broke through into the mainstream in 1993, when a live video for "Mother," a song originally released on Danzig, became an inescapable smash on MTV and even charted as a single, nearly cracking the Billboard Top 40.
The more experimental Danzig 4 was released in 1994 and entered the charts at number 29, but its quiet, moody, atmospheric subtlety didn't find as much favor with the band's new audience as the anthemic "Mother," while some longtime fans dismissed it as mellow and therefore commercial.
Their self-titled debut found Danzig playing the Satanic metal singer role to the hilt, even if the band's songs sounded much the same.

 Danzig Album Reviews
A downside of this explorative direction is the fact that the album’s not as instantly catchy, and that there’s the obligatory art song (basically a five-minute dirge that embodies “superfluity”), but overall, this might be the most rewarding Danzig album, and I realized that only this week.
The most recognizable mischievous sprite, however, a song that became an unexpected hit a few years after this album was released, is the anthemic “Mother,” possibly the most accessible the band ever got.
Danzig himself – fully embraces the Southern Gothic sensibilities and skewed romanticism that were already present – but usually diluted – on the first two albums.

Returning to his later, harder music, Danzig then roared flawlessly through his signature "Mother." During the two-song encore, Doyle rejoined the band for an explosive version of "Bloodfeast." The band left with the crowd still cheering.
While his lyrics might be too dark for some, many of Danzig's songs boast catchy choruses that use variations on "whoa" and "yeah" to such an end that even those unfamiliar with his material find themselves instantly singing along.
With rumors flying that this is his last tour, the anticipation for his arrival was measured by the restless chanting of his name.

During his time in the seminal hardcore band the Misfits, vocalist Glenn Danzig displayed a fascination with outlandish, graphic, often gory imagery; in forming the more heavy metal-oriented band Samhain, Danzig's lyrics delved into typical metal subject matter, but took the concept of darkness to an extreme.
After the demise of Samhain, Danzig formed his own eponymous band with Samhain guitarist John Christ, ex-Rosemary's Babies drummer Eerie Von on bass, and longtime hardcore drummer Chuck Biscuits (D.O.A., Black Flag, Circle Jerks); this band would prove a more effective vehicle for Danzig's obsession with the dark side.

The transitional November-Coming-Fire has some of Samhain's most intriguingly arranged songs, most notably the atmospheric ballad "To Walk the Night." The heavier, more metallic music (exemplified by the crunching "Mother of Mercy") and lyrical development (the horror angle is out, pagan religion is in) helped pave Samhain's evolution into Danzig.
Final Descent ties up the loose ends from this period, combining a splendid five-song session from '87 with Danzig guitarist John Christ (the hypnotic, rolling "Lords of the Left Hand" is the highlight of these previously unreleased cuts) and what sounds like the same set of Unholy Passion remixes to reach album length.
In an attempt to exploit their cult fame among the thrash generation, surnameless ex-Misfit brothers Jerry (bass) and Doyle (guitar), always the band's live albatross, formed a dopey metal act called Kryst the Conqueror.

Though uneven at points, Legacy does preserve some of the Misfits' finest moments, such as "Angelfuck" and "She." Originally CD-only, then reissued on vinyl and cassette, Misfits is a 20-cut retrospective that includes remixes, alternate takes and one jarring edit that cuts out the second half of "Teenagers from Mars"/"Children in Heat."

While that obsession can seem cartoonish at times, there is more to the band than meets the eye -- Danzig obviously relishes casting himself as the menacing, evil heavy metal frontman, and his theatricality often seems to indicate that his posturing is not meant to be taken very seriously.
