Mother Joseph (April 16, 1823 January 19, 1902) was born Esther Pariseau in St.
In 1856 Mother Joseph was chosen to lead a group of five missionaries to the Pacific Northwest Territories of the United States.
In 1953 the American Institute of Architects declared Mother Joseph "The First Architect of the Pacific Northwest." In 1980, the state of Washington donated a bronze statue of Mother Joseph to the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall Collection.

At the time of her death, Mother Joseph's dying words were, "Sisters, whatever concerns the poor is always our affair." After her death in January, 1902, Mother Mary Antoinette said of her, "She had the characteristics of genius: incessant works, immense sacrifices, great undertakings, and she never counted the cost to self.
In a steady correspondence with her friends and spiritual advisors, Mother Joseph spoke openly of her pain and growing weakness, and of her preparations for death.
Because of her contribution in designing and building institutions, Mother Joseph is considered by many to be one of the first architects in the northwest, and also is recognized as an early artisan who used native northwest woods.

On December 8, 1856, Mother Joseph and four other Sisters of Providence from Montreal arrived at Fort Vancouver to begin their mission of caring for the sick, the aged and the poor, educating the young and housing the orphaned.
The second was a plaque in her memory at Southwest Washington Medical Center, formerly St. Joseph’s Hospital (1858-1967), in Vancouver, Washington.  The third, and most daunting, was to have April 16 designated as Mother Joseph Day in the state of Washington.

At any rate, it appears that on the original microfiche record of the vital records when John SALYER and Evaline married her name was first listed as SMITH, marked through and JACKSON written over it.
Their mother, Vina or LaVina, married John MONTGOMERY in 1848 and they are listed in the 1850 census with her children as well as his by a prior marriage.
Believed to be the Charles Joseph in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Breathitt Co., Kentucky census.
