In 1982, Mother Teresa persuaded Israelis and Palestinians, who were in the midst of a skirmish, to cease fire long enough to rescue 37 mentally-handicapped patients from a besieged hospital in Beirut.
Mother Teresa was granted a full state funeral by the Indian Government, an honor normally given to presidents and prime ministers, in gratitude for her services to the poor of all religions in India.

As some readers are aware, Mother Theresa was a Catholic nun who worked among the very poor and was rejected in India and many other countries.
The story that has been told to me by a priest, who was an eyewitness to this incident involving Mother Theresa, was that she approached a very wealthy businessman in India with both hands outstretched.
Many years later, how-ever, the same businessman, who was possibly so moved by Mother Theresa's humility and forgiveness, sought Christ, became a Christian, sold his business, and gave the entire proceeds of the sale to Mother Theresa's work among the poor.

Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje*, Macedonia, on August 27, 1910.
On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, "The Missionaries of Charity", whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after.
Mother Teresa's work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972).
