  George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic | METANCITY

 P Funk
The term P-Funk is an abbreviation for the two bands, sometimes called "Parliment-Funkadelic," It is an abbreviation for Pure Funk, a genre of music, and Plainfield Funk, referring to Plainfield, New Jersey, the hometown of The Parliaments, the original P-Funk group.
The breakout popularity of Parliament Funkadelic also led to the use of the term "P-funk" to mean something in its quintessence, of superior quality (e.g., "This is the p-funk of audio speakers"), or sui generis.
Mothership Connection became the group's first gold LP.

Parliament: Mothership Connection - PopMatters Music Review
To say, then, that Mothership Connection stands out among the work of this period is high praise indeed.
The one that is included (the radio edit of "Mothership Connection"), demonstrates clearly what was lost by truncating a Parliament track: at 3'08", the edit never has a chance to develop the near-mystic fervor of the original album track.
In any case, Mothership Connection is prime evidence of the genius of George Clinton.

Parliament: 'Up for the Down Stroke', 'Chocolate City' and 'Mothership Connection': Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
For all the myth surrounding Parliament, Funkadelic and George Clinton, the P-Funk mob rise to freaky fame and fortune in the mid-70s was less the result of cosmic slop than a long, hard road of bad deals and slim payoffs made only through relentless persistence.
Mothership Connection was a massive R&B hit and even produced a pop hit in "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)".
The title track offers one of the classic P-Funk refrains-- "Swing low, sweet chariot, and let me ride"-- and the weirdly religious undertones in the music were reflected in the cultish image of the band and the feverish scenes of their concerts from the time.

 Guts 22b Classic CD, Parliament
Several weeks prior to this, I decided that my classic album for February would be "Mothership Connection" by Parliament, but it wasn't until this moment that I realized there was a generation of people who know who George Clinton is, but really don't know why.
The Mothership 'ain't nothin' but a party,' but it's also a means of salvation, for as Starchild says, 'You have overcome, for I am here.' And combining and comparing the Mothership to "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", the old spiritual, is a brilliant device.
The outrageousness of the concepts allows the deeper meaning to sink in slowly, and while there's a loose connection amongst all the songs, each stands out individually, not trapped within the order or framework or an album, something that happens often with concept albums.

The addition of ex-JB's Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker to the Parliament roster on Mothership Connection elevated an already mind-blowing band into the best funk band of the '70s, arguably the best funk band ever.
The second song, "Mothership Connection (Star Child)," makes the differentiation glaringly evident, most noticeably when the song enters the cosmic, proto-hip-hop "swing down sweet chariot" bridge with its accompanying melody from beyond.
The funk doesn't stop there, though, with the remaining five songs keeping the tempo laden with dense interweaving rhythms, peaking on "Give up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)." In the end, there's no questioning this album's impact, one that is still being felt via rap-induced aftershocks.

George and the gang bring it all together on this record, and the funk just keeps on coming.
Moving on, Starchild takes over for "Mothership Connection," which has a great groove and makes creative usage of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot." "Unfunky UFO" is possibly the best track on the album, all about aliens from the Sun who have come to earth in search of the funk.

Mothership Connection is patterned closely after last year's tongue-in-cheek success, Chocolate City.
