Their society is extremely efficient, because there is no question about a particular Motie’s place in society, no need to prepare a Motie for more than one career path, or waste time or resources teaching them skills they may or may not use in the future.
The Moties also seem to have an instinctive, genetic talent for their jobs, so that it is easier to educate them than it is to educate a human.
The Cycles have proven in Motie history to be thus far unavoidable, and Crazy Eddie ideas have only served to either put off collapse, speed it up, or in the case of the Crazy Eddie probe and presumably the asteroid civilizations, expand it to new places.

 Motie - Wikipedia

In the system they meet and bring aboard a single Motie, whose fascination factor is exceeded only by the miniature Moties she brings along.
The real star of the novel, though, is the carefully crafted and gradually revealed Motie civilization--and the Moties themselves, as individuated as their human counterparts.
If the Motie civilization is the star, the human culture is a close second.

The Moties are radically different (both physically and psychologically) from humanity, in ways that become more clear over the course of the book.

The Moties can not stop breeding, and while expansion to other planets seems a solution, this only works until all planets are full with Moties - at which time a devastating war for space and resources will begin.

Communications between humans and Moties is done entirely in English, not just for narrative convenience, but because it is a fact of this particular contact that the Moties (well, some of them) were able to learn our language quickly, and we were never able to decipher theirs.
When we hear the Moties talk, in their alien chirps and whistles, the audience would be as much in the dark as the humans in the story.
The novel does have some small sections of narrative in which the reader can "hear" a Motie's thoughts or words, but until the end they are the sort of thing a film rendition would probably dispose of anyway, and even at the end I think it can be worked around.

The moties are three-armed aliens (two normal arms, and a dominant arm with some extra Arm ST) with a very very old civilization.
The main "population problem" was that moties have to have children, or they'll die.
So their race is constantly growing, and the only real form of population control that they have is war, which inevitably breaks out and eventually destroys their present civilization.

A quarter century after humanity quarantined the aliens known as the Moties within the confines of their own solar system, the wall between them and the galaxy beyond is beginning to crumble.
After being confined to their own planetary system by a heavily enforced naval blockade because of the dangers they represent for mankind, the highly specialized and swiftly breeding aliens known as Moties are finally poised to break free.
The key difference in this latest encounter, however, is that both men and Moties now have their own unique bargaining chips, a situation that may or may not forestall a species-annihilating war.
