Topic: Motion JPEG

MJPEG - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) is an informal name for multimedia formats where each video frame or interlaced field of a digital video sequence is separately compressed as a JPEG image.
Unlike the video formats specified in international standards such as MPEG-2 and the format specified in the JPEG still-picture coding standard, there is no document that defines a single exact format that is universally recognized as a complete specification of "Motion JPEG" for use in all contexts.
Motion JPEG uses intraframe coding technology that is very similar in technology to the I-frame part of video coding standards such as MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, but does not use interframe prediction.

JPEG consists of a minimum implementation (called a baseline system) which all implementations are required to support, and various extensions for specific applications.
The motion vector for both color difference blocks is derived by halving the component values of the macroblock vector and truncating the magnitude parts towards zero to yield integer components.
Motion compensation involves working with groups of pixels (16x16 macroblocks) to identify a group in the previous frame that best matches a group in the current frame, coding the difference along with a vector that describes the offset (movement) of that group.

JPEG, Motion JPEG and MPEG are three well-used acronyms used to describe different types of image compression format.
The advantage of JPEG 2000 is that the blockiness of JPEG is removed, but replaced with a more overall fuzzy picture, as can be seen in Figure 3.
In Motion JPEG/Motion JPEG 2000 each picture in the sequence is coded as a separate unique picture resulting in the same sequence as the original one.

Although Motion JPEG allows high compression and good quality, the problem is that the format is not standardized.

Motion JPEG 2000 is a standard for image sequences that leverages the powerful wavelet based JPEG 2000 Part 1 standard.
The standard will allow one or more JPEG 2000 compressed image sequences, synchronized audio and metadata to be stored in the Motion JPEG 2000 file format (MJ2).

MPEG augments JPEG with motion compensation, a form of differential encoding, and achieves compression ratios as high as 200 to 1.
This motion compensation poses the most difficult problem for operating on MPEG data, since the motion vector may refer to a block of pixels that is not aligned on a macroblock boundary.

Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) is a video codec where each video field is separately compressed into a JPEG image.
The resulting quality of video compression is independent from the motion in the image which differs from MPEG video where quality often decreases when footage contains lots of movement.
In addition, standard resolution recording is best used when archiving video for non-critical cameras, needing to conserve drive space, as well as conserve bandwidth when recording off-site to a central network storage unit.

The combination of the MotionWavelets codec and an inexpensive video capture device is an effective alternative to costly solutions using MPEG, Motion JPEG and other hardware capture codecs.
Key frames only: Like Motion JPEG, MotionWavelets uses only key frames, or I frames, which means that each compressed frame is independent of the others.
Other benefits are the absence of motion artifacts in the video and a more uniform compressed data rate.

The Lava Flow | Motion JPEG vs Photo JPEG
JPEG is a lossy format, and there are 2 main sources of loss when a JPEG codec is used – firstly there’s chroma downsampling and secondly there’s quantisation.
In terms of video footage, this relates to a fields issue and is another reason why you should use MJPEG codecs for interlaced footage instead of Photo JPEG.
Photo JPEG does not compress fields separately and downsamples chroma vertically, which can lead to field mush when used with interlaced footage.
