Motion control photography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Motion control photography is a special effects technique used in film that creates the illusion of size from small models by moving a small camera by the model at very slow speeds.
The first suggestions that this was possible came about when John Whitney pioneered several motion techniques using old anti-aircraft analog computers connected to servos to control the motion of lights and lit targets.
The downside to motion control is that it requires considerable programming in order to make the camera move the way you want.

 Motion control and consciousness
It remains to relate motion control to first person aspects of consciousness involving "qualia" or "experience."  The connection can be made by identifying experience with the continually shifting pattern of activity in the motion control system of an independently moving entity in a changing environment.
The identification of experience with activity patterns in the motion control system of an entity with directly connected components implies there is nothing "it is like" to be a brick, a rosebush, a flock of birds, a school of fish, or a termite colony.
Motion control system activation can be expected to be particularly intense in situations of great importance to an entity's survival.

Motion controllers are capable of generating a variety of motion trajectories.
This is facilitated by the controller's ability to operate in various motion control modes, which we are examining in this series.
As the rotary motion is transmitted via a leadscrew, backlash causes a delay in the loop, resulting in oscillations.

 Motion Control
When talking about mechanical systems, typically some sort of input motion or signal is used to control the output motion of the system using some sort of feedback to maintain the output at a level selected by the input.
A common control mechanism, for small robots, is to control the velocity of a motor.
Position control loops are very much like the traditional R/C servos: you input a desired position and the servo logic drives the output shaft to that position with whatever force is required.

Motion Controller Articles will point you to recent application and product articles that have appeared recently in the pages of Machine Design magazine.
Depending on the application, motion control can refer to simple on-off control or a sequencing of events, controlling the speed of a motor, moving objects from one point to another, or precisely constraining the speed, acceleration, and position of a system throughout a move.
No overview of motion control would be complete without a discussion of the various control options that are widely used.

The purpose of this site is to suggest that motion control is also an emerging medium for artistic expression.
Despite the universal use of motion control in industrial settings, its use by artists has been hampered by the enormous cost of commercial equipment.
Because access to the tools of this medium is crucial for its exploration, one strategy open to motivated artists, is building their own equipment from scrapped components flowing out of industrial sources.
