		A PT boat was a motor torpedo boat (hull classification symbol "PT"), a small, fast vessel used by the United States Navy in World War II to attack larger surface ships.
		The most famous of these torpedo boats, PT-109, commanded by future United States President John F. Kennedy, was one of the hundreds of members of the PT-103 class completed between 1942 and 1945 by Elco Naval Division of Electric Boat Company at Bayonne, New Jersey.
		The story of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Three in the retreat from the Philippines early in World War II was documented in the book They Were Expendable by W.L. White, ISBN 1557509484, originally published in 1942 soon after the events depicted.

		This was a United States Naval squadron made up of six motor torpedo boats (called PT Boats) based at Cavite, Philippines, in late 1941.
		On March 11, 1942, the remaining boats of the squadron transported General Douglas MacArthur and several high-ranking officers from Corregidor to Mindanao, an act which earned every member of the squadron the Silver Star.
		These three boats were based at Mindanao until mid-April 1942, where two of them (PT 41 and PT 34) attacked a large Japanese Cruiser (the KUMA), scoring at least one hit.

		On April 9, 1944, the first six boats of the Squadron, PTs 510, 511, 512, 515, 516 and 518, departed Melville and New York enroute to Miami, FL where they were to under go shakedown exercises and further at-sea training.
		By May 19th, all twelve boats of the Squadron had been loaded onto the decks of three tankers and, in their cradles, lashed tightly to the ships.
