Road Safety : Advice and Information : Motorcycling : Motorcyclists Policy Statements
Younger motorcyclists have more accidents than older ones and consequently the law restricts the size and power of motorcycles that may be used by novices, and requires them to take training before riding on the road.
Motorcyclists should not ride if they feel affected by medicines (including some everyday ones) or illegal drugs, or if they are taking medicine or undergoing any medical treatment which advises against driving or riding.
Motorcyclists may be more susceptible to fatigue because of noise, vibration and exposure to weather conditions.

Motorcycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The motorcyclist must, therefore, consider proper motorcycle attire such as helmet ("full-face" providing the most protection), gloves, boots, and "leathers".
This is because the very small number of events where a non-motorcyclist is offended by a motorcyclist (perhaps by excess exhaust noise, reckless behaviour, or news reporting of a motorcycle gang incident) are amplified in popular thought.
Many of those who ride motorcycles prefer the more neutral terms "rider" or "motorcyclist." In Australia and New Zealand the word "bikie" is used instead of "biker".

Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety
Per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists are about 21 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash and four times as likely to be injured.
In 2003, 36 percent of all motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes were speeding, approximately twice the rate for drivers of passenger cars or light trucks.
The average hospital charge for motorcyclists with serious head injuries was found to be almost three times that of motorcyclists with mild or no head injuries, $43,214 v.

 Motorcyclists & Crash Barriers Project
The motorcyclist is not contained within a vehicle and consequently it is often the rider that makes contact with the crash barrier, which is made to withstand the impact and absorb the energy of a vehicle weighing up to 40 tons.
Motorcyclists are shown as particularly vulnerable to any imperfections in the road surface that affects stability.
Where the motorcyclist is taught and tries to prevent accident from happening, road safety experts also try, through passive safety, or secondary safety measures, to reduce consequences of an accident to car occupant.

BMF Briefing PPE for Motorcyclists   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
For motorcyclists' impact protectors, the impact energy is 50 Joules (roughly the equivalent of being struck by an average 2.5 kilogramme house brick dropped from 2 metres) and the mean transmitted force should not exceed 35 kiloNewtons (kN).
The regulations concerning PPE for motorcyclists are quite plain: if the manufacturer claims in their literature or advertising that the product, or some component of it is intended to provide protection, then the product or component shall be considered PPE and must be brought into compliance with the PPE regulations.
Given current trends, it appears inevitable that many more motorcyclists are going to be injured as a result of substandard clothing failing catastrophically in a crash before any significant improvement in manufacturers' recognition of their legal obligations takes place.

On the 29th of September 2004, European motorcyclists met with their elected Representatives for the 8th MEP Motorcycle Ride, which has become an immensely popular event with the European Parliament (EP).
Organised by the Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA), the MEP Motorcycle Ride has become an event that is very much appreciated and enjoyed by Members of the European Parliament, parliamentary staff and officials of other European institutions, including the European Commission.
This year's participants were invited to gather in Brussels' Parc Cinquantenaire to choose their favourite motorcycle for a ride, and to adjourn for refreshments in the historic ambiance of the Autoworld museum.

Motorcyclists could split lanes if House bill passes - The Daily Texan - State & Local
Motorcyclists are going to find riding during rush hour a little easier if a House bill filed last Wednesday is passed.
If the traffic is moving 20 mph or slower in an area that is not a school zone, then the motorcyclist would be allowed to move in between lanes and go 5 mph faster than the traffic, when it is safe.
"Splitting lanes," as the practice is often called by motorcyclists, is common and legal in California and Europe, but in those areas riders have the option to ride much faster between lanes than is proposed in Texas.

AMADirectlink - Motorcyclists Matter   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Of the 1,319 fatal car-motorcycle crashes in 1999, 38 percent involved another vehicle violating the motorcyclist's right-of-way by turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking the vehicle.
Compounding this serious traffic safety issue is the attitude of indifference that permeates law enforcement and the courts in matters regarding the violation of a motorcyclist's right-of-way.
Consequently, the penalty for a right-of-way violator who dings a car, is generally the same as the penalty for a right-of-way violator that sends a more vulnerable road user, such as a motorcyclist, to the hospital or grave; a misdemeanor or summary offense with a small fine from $25 to $100.

The Detection of DWI Motorcyclists   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
It is important to note that motorcyclists between the ages of 21 and 26 years old represent nearly 40 percent of the sample of 908 DWI motorcyclists for whom age is known.
For example, those motorcyclists suspected of stimulant use were apparently engaged in risk-taking behavior indicating impaired judgment; motorcyclists suspected of using depressants showed behaviors suggestive of impaired balance; and the few suspected phencyclidine (PCP) users tended to fall from their motorcycles.
As a result, motorcyclists are stopped for “ticketable” offenses immediately after they are observed by an officer, but balance and vigilance problems (the behaviors that are the most predictive of DWI for motorcyclists) are usually followed by further scrutiny to add confirmation to an officer’s initial suspicions.

San Diego Motorcycle Accident Lawyer - Arizona Motorcycle Accident Attorney - Joseph L. Eggleston - AIM - NCOM
Attorney Joseph L. Eggleston has been representing motorcyclists since 1983, long before their representation became popular and back when bikers were treated with disrespect by society in general and other attorneys in particular.
The fact is that over 80% of all multi-vehicle accidents involving motorcyclists are not the motorcyclist’s fault.
It is, therefore, crucial that motorcyclists seek the advice of an experienced and compassionate attorney like Joe Eggleston to vigorously fight the government, the courts, and the insurance companies to make sure that his clients receive the maximum monetary recovery for their damages against the negligent party.

Protest ride against harsh policing tactics employed on motorcyclists by North Wales Police a success
Not normally known for direct action, the 140,000 strong British Motorcyclists Federation nevertheless backed this particular protest following a growing number of complaints about the way random stop-checks were being conducted, and in this respect at least, the protest seems to have worked.
Receiving a 50-man delegation from the protestors, Deputy Chief Constable Bill Brereton (himself a motorcyclist) heard many riders complain of an over-concentration on small number plates and illegal exhausts while the real issue of accident reduction was missed.
The BMF will continue to work with the police to address the issue of motorcycle related accidents but hope that this peaceful protest run has emphasised the fact that motorcyclists are aggrieved that simply by riding a motorcycle, they are being treated like criminal suspects.

It says bikers cannot use the law as a defense to run any red light they want by saying they believed the light was controlled by sensors that did not recognize their motorcycles.

Columnist Brian Dickerson, in yesterday’s edition of the Detroit Free Press, is the latest to call for motorcyclists to be de-facto organ donors.
Earlier, the AMA joined motorcyclists nationwide in defeating actual legislative proposals in New Mexico and California that would’ve required motorcyclists to be organ donors.
But by suggesting that injured motorcyclists be left to die, Dickerson has set an all-time low -- and the AMA has told him so.

With the help of motorcyclists in the York Group of Advanced Motorists and ex-committee members of that group the number of full members of the IAM required to start a separate group was exceeded and the IAM agreed to the York Advanced Motorcyclist group being formed and affiliated to the IAM.
