M1 motorway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first motorway service station in the UK was built at Watford Gap and later imortalised in song by Roy Harper.
The motorway is 187 miles (301 km) long and was constructed in stages between the 1950s and 1970s, with a further extension in the late 1990s.
It was the first full-length motorway to be built in the United Kingdom, and was opened on November 2, 1959.

House of Commons Hansard Debates for 10 Feb 1992
If a motorway service area did not provide the full range of services, it would be appropriate for that to be indicated on the signs so that motorists would be aware of the services that they could expect to find.
There are one or two motorway services which make a contribution to improving the landscape of the locality, but that is the exception and not the rule.
Motorway service areas in England have been centrally planned and controlled since the inception of the motorway network.

 Petrol (Service) Station: Non-Places of Travel-Visual Art-Marc Auge-Non-Places-Anthropology-Supermodernity ’
Petrol stations are often located in remote, far away places, like the ones on motorways, which are part of service stations.
Built as convenience stop along the motorway, the petrol/service station is just as provisional and temporary space on the global network of road travel, as airports lounges are.
Service station is a dehumanising place, where all are reduced to the stereotypes of traveller and consumer, and individuality holds no currency.

 Guardian Service stations 'lacking'
Motorway service stations were yesterday found by the Office of Fair Trading to be failing to provide customers with value for money.
Mr Vickers said the service stations were unusual in that road safety considerations and highway regulations affected their cost structure, the amount of retail space they were allowed to offer, their product range, the ease of market entry, and the ability of the operators to advertise.
The OFT report was welcomed by the service station operators who had argued that their high prices were a result of their unique infrastructure costs.

 practice as research
Whilst the users of the motorway service station do not necessarily have access to the vocabulary of Augé, their use of the space suggests that they are familiar with the concept, at least at an operational level.
From this immaculate white space we used charcoal to map out the spaces of Manchester Airport (Terminal one, two and three), The Trafford Centre, a shopping mall in Trafford, Manchester (two floors), and Roadchef Sandbach Motorway Service Station on the M6 (with six lanes of traffic between the Northbound and Southbound sites).
Thus the users of the service station may not consciously be aware of the habitus of the space, nonetheless they occupy it according to a set of acculturated principles, unconsciously reinforcing its habitus.

icBerkshire - Apology over motorway service plans
THE inspector leading a public inquiry into whether two motor-way service stations should be built on the edge of Binfield has apologised to residents and admitted that earlier inquiries had been mishandled.
He said a judge had overruled the outcome of the previous inquiry when developers complained that seven plans for services on the M4, M25 and M40 in the 1990s were considered by different inspectors and were therefore not properly compared for their impact on greenbelt.
Campaigners say there is no need for services at these sites, they object to the noise and light pollution, effect on wildlife and loss of land for walkers and riders.

 Not Knowing
This went on for a few moments until I realised that we were almost passing a cut off road from the motorway to the service station and I pulled the steering wheel to steer the Jeep into the motorway service station.
The motorway was almost deserted and to be honest I had to looked twice and the series of small lights that were traveling in front of the Jeep.
There were two persons in the Jeep traveling on the M62 motorway in the UK at about midnight Christmas Eve, myself and my niece who was driving traveling from Hull to Bradford in West Yorkshire.

Service Station Snacking  For some reason it always seems to take a long time to get from one place to another in the UK
Motorway service stations may not offer the most budget-friendly hospitality around, but they do offer a relaxing alternative to spending a frustrating time inching towards major intersections with only the cars around you to look at!
If you are planning a journey from one city to another, and know which motorways you will be using, check out the following websites in advance of your trip to see which of the motorway service areas you will pass on the way to your destination.
The larger service station areas offer a variety of places to eat, a place to purchase supplies, tourist information, and sometimes a motel.

Reviews on Motorway Services Look at tests, reports and read reviews: dooyoo.co.uk
Motorway service stations are the apparent driver's haven, spaced at regular intervals along major roads, a place where you can rest your weary body and recharge for the road ahead...
Motorway services - love them or hate them, we've all used them at some point, wether it be as some where to stop off for the loo or somewhere to get a bite to eat and a cup of coffee.
In their favour, motorway services provide handy toilet stops at regular intervals (unless you are between Oxford and London and plan to go round the M25 anti-clockwise).

Motorway aires are designed to provide a suitable environment for relaxing, refreshing and recovering during the long, hard journeys.
This aire on the autoroute (motorway) between Cannes and Nice is a hidden playground, away from the fraught drone of a busy, semi-urban motorway.
Both the Bréguières aires are difficult to spot as you drive down this stretch of the A8 motorway, heavily used by aspiring Grand Prix drivers.

The Urinals of Watfod Gap Service Station
The Watford Gap Service Station is a rest area on UK's principal motorway, the M1.
The rest of the service station seems to be mirror images, so it's surprising that the urinals aren't.

 BBC Radio 4 - Thinking Allowed - 17 December 2003
Being English in Scotland - Motorway service station
Not quite town and definitely not country, the service station was originally designed as a life-line for hungry motorists and hungry cars.
In recent years it has become an increasingly complex social space as the closing of amenities in the surrounding area has encouraged many to make it a focal point for their local networks.

How to look a prat at a motorway service station
In short, if you're filling your windscreen washer bottle, the odds are it'll be the middle of the night, at a motorway service station.
23b i) Realise that you are 20 yards from the water hose in a service station which has no receptacles on its forecourt, not even those plastic gloves, which could possibly be used to carry water.
Despite the fact it is midnight, all of a sudden it is very busy and there are queues of people waiting to fill their cars with petrol who are entertaining themselves by watching you.

BBC Stoke & Staffordshire Travel - New M6 toll road services
The contract to run the new service station was awarded to Roadchef, a company well known in the UK motorway service station market.
With the modern building and exceptional services offered by "the best motorway service area in the UK", in the opinion of RoadChef boss John Greenwood, the parking space for around 500 vehicles would undoubtedly be justified.
The new services are claimed to change "people's perceptions and expectations of motorway services".

 New M42 Motorway Services
Campaigners fighting a plan to build a motorway service station at Junction 5 of the M42 have welcomed a decision by one of the developers involved to throw in the towel.
A Motorway Service Area on the M42 has been agreed in principle for Catherine de Barnes on the basis that the significant need outweighs the harm caused by the development.
Planning application to build a twenty-six hectare (sixty-five acre) service station on Ravenshaw Lane at Junction 6 of the M42 was granted at the beginning of March 2001.

Scotsman.com News - Health - 11 pints of coffee to stay awake on motorway
However, new research shows motorway service station coffee is so weak that a drowsy driver would have to drink 11 pints to ward off fatigue.
But not one of the cups of coffee bought by Auto Express at motorway service stations came anywhere near that.
Of 25 service stations tested, not one served coffee strong enough to keep a driver awake for the recommended two hours, the motoring magazine Auto Express found.
