  Churruca - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
He was born in Motrico, Guipuzcoa, in 1761 and in 1776 joined the Naval Academies of El Ferrol and Cadiz.
Motrico is a picturesque port and a multicoloured farmstead, and its Neoclassical church where some works of art, one of which is a 'Christ' attributed to El Greco, are kept.
Motrico was the birthplace of Churruca, the glorious hero of Trafalgar.

The title Count of Motrico presently is held by the family of the wife of Jose Maria de Areilza y Martinez Rodas, born in the Basque province of Vizcaya.

In the field of waves and associated `phenomena, his formulations to estimate the characteristics of extreme waves, the method of wave maps to study its propagation in coastal areas, his studies of resonance (long waves) in harbours and his works on the limit slope between reflection and wave rupture should be recalled.
The method of wave maps, applied for the first time in 1932 for the study of the Port of Motrico and first published in 1941, supposed a great innovation that was used for almost half a century and has been only surpassed by the popularization of computers.
His studies of resonance, provoked by the problems suffered by the Port of Motrico, were also pioneer and concluded with the project and construction of some very effective works aimed to avoid the problem.

He was a Spanish Naval Officer born in Motrico (Gulpuzcoa) on September 27, 1761.
