  TEMPORARY HARLEM RIVER BRIDGE AND THE MOVING OF THE MOTT HAVEN STATION - New York City
Mott Haven lies in The Bronx but was known then as part of the Annexed District.
In order to give the railroad transit across the river while the new bridge is in course of erection, a temporary drawbridge and viaduct has been built crossing the river to the west and north of the old one.
The Mott Haven station was situated on the west of and close to the tracks used by three railroads, the New York Central, New York and New Haven and the New York and Harlem Railroads, immediately north of the bridge.

As the railroad was extended, the center of population shifted west from the area east of the Bronx River, and the towns of West Farms (1846) and Morrisania (1855) were established.

In 1904 the first subway connecting the Bronx to Manhattan was built under 149th Street, providing cheap rapid transit that with the 3rd Avenue elevated line persuaded hundreds of thousands during the first third of the twentieth century to leave tenements in Manhattan for spacious new apartments in the Bronx.

New York, January 18, 2001 -- Congressman José E. Serrano (D-NY) yesterday presented The New York Public Library with a $500,000 check in federal appropriations funding for the ongoing renovation and expansion of the Mott Haven Branch Library in the South Bronx.
The Mott Haven Branch, one of the original 65 libraries that Andrew Carnegie gave to the City of New York in 1901, was closed for renovation in late 1998.
Designed by architects Babb, Cook and Williard, Mott Haven has the distinction of being modeled after Carnegie's personal residence and is the oldest public library building in the Bronx.

 Third Avenue Bridge
As early as 1774, officials in the New York colony proposed a fixed Harlem River crossing between Harlem and the Mott Haven section of the Bronx.
Coles was required to give security of 4000 pounds to New York State to complete the bridge in four years, and after a 60-year period (during which Coles had the right to collect tolls), the bridge was to become the property of the state.
The new company, which was responsible for maintaining the bridge and nearby approaches, had a complicated rate structure ranging from one penny for cattle to 37 cents for carriages.

Amazing Grace, by Jonathan Kozol, sheds light on a part of New York City that is often forgotten: Mott Haven, a neighborhood in the South Bronx that is also the poorest congressional district in the country.
As it is now, many New Yorkers with money and therefore the power to effect change, do little except to ensure that their own children have decent schools and that they themelves live in safe neighborhoods.
For example, Kozol writes about a medical waste incinerator in Mott Haven that was moved to the community when angry people on the Upper East Side insisted that it be moved out of their neighborhood because of hazardous health risks accompanying it.
