Until 1974, Longdendale was the easternmost extension of the county palatine of Chester.
The lordship of Longdendale was an ancient feudal estate based on the manor of Mottram, Buckton castle (in the neighbouring Tame valley) and the borough of Tintwistle.
An estate survey, or 'Extent' of the lordship for 1360 was published by the Record Society of Lancashire and Cheshire in July 2005.

Longdendale is a valley mainly in the Derbyshire Peak District in the north west of England, north of Glossop and south east of Holmfirth.
There are plans afoot to re-open the railway and to re-route the Longdendale Trail parallel to the railway.
The most western part of the Longdendale valley belongs to the metropolitan borough of Tameside, Greater Manchester, comprising Broadbottom, Mottram in Longdendale and Hollingworth.

The lesser manor of Stavely was held under the greater one of Mottram and, at about the 16th century, the former was in the parish of Mottram.
In the early 19th century, Mottram was the district centre for shoe-making and tailoring, as well as for cultural activities such as botanical studies, music, change-ringing and folk-pastimes, including rush-cart events and morris dancing.
In 1936 the Urban District of Longdendale was formed consisting of Broadbottom, Hollingworth, Mottram and parts of Hattersley and Matley.

Mottram, or Mottram-in-Longdendale, is a township in the parish of its name, and hundred of Macclesfield, between 7 and 8 miles S.E. of Stockport, twelve from Manchester, by Stalybridge, and 10 by the new road; 29 to Sheffield, by way of Woodhead, and about the same distance through Glossopdale.
Mottram hill rises above Car Tor, to the height of 450 feet: from the summits of these eminences prospects most extensive may be contemplated.
The parish of Mottram comprises the twonships of Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Stalybridge and Tintwistle, which, together, contained, the the returns for 1821, 10,086 inhabitants, and at the census for 1831 the population had increased to 15,536, of which latter number 2,144 were returned for Mottram township.

At the start of the nineteenth century, Longdendale consisted of the eight townships: Mottram, Godley, Hattersley, Newton, Hollingworth, Tintwistle, Matley and Staley, its population was less than a thousand.
Mottram the main town of Longdendale was a centre of religion in the middle ages and held a large market for the surrounding villages.
At the start of the cotton industry, Mottram had a sizeable input, and during the nineteenth century it was a centre for shoe making and cultural activities such as botany and music.

 Mottram court house - Longdendale - Tameside
The court house is situated in the centre of Mottram's historically preserved centre.
The court house was a Sunday School for Methodists between 1789 and 1791, and the pole that stands near the building is the crown or Coronation pole for George the Third and was erected in 1760.
The drinking fountain celebrates the year 1888, when Mottram first recieved piped water.
