Moulin Rouge was one of his biggest hits - it helped finance at least one film, Moby Dick - but it's often termed kitsch because it (of course) simplifies its subject and consciously mimicks the look of Toulouse-Lautrec paintings.
Moulin Rouge looks to have been shot with heavy diffusion and special lighting in the dance scenes to emulate Toulouse-Lautrec's canvasses and by and large it's successful - the film has a unique "painterly" look that connects the artist to the audience in the same way as last year's Girl With a Pearl Earring.
In a way Moulin Rouge is first a vehicle for José Ferrer, the kind of elitist toast-of-the-town actor that wide audiences tend to abandon after a while.

Baz Luhrmann's "Moulin Rouge," which bears no relation to the 1952 movie of the same name, is rife with contradictions.
This "Moulin Rouge" is based loosely on the myth of Orpheus in the Underworld, about a figure in search of true love who risks all by descending to the depths to find it.
Kidman's descent from the sky into the nightclub on a trapeze is perhaps the movie's most electrifying image, but Luhrmann also makes use of digital photography to scan the entire neighborhood of the Right Bank as though photographer Donald M. McAlpine soared through the city of lights on a 'copter.

The film is a touch longer than I felt it needed to be (some of the musical numbers could have quite easily been cut) and occasionally seems to lose it's momentum but is saved by gloriously gaudy direction and a great performance by Jose Ferrer as the diminutive Toulouse-Lautrec.
The scenes in the Moulin Rouge don't really convey how outrageous this club must have been back then - but I suppose that says more about our society than the film.
This stands alone as a well crafted film that needs no comparisons with any other versions of Moulin Rouge due to it's focus on the difficult love and remoteness of it's main character.
