 Moultrie County Pifers
David L. Pifer rolled into Moultrie County (on a covered wagon, goes the story) in 1851, coming all the way from Franklin County, Ohio, to East Nelson Township, southeast of present-day Sullivan.
David, Daniel, Catherine and Samuel were all in Moultrie by 1860, later joined by Israel, Catherine and Margaret, and finally by John and Mary themselves.
Catherine's husband, Benjamin Haydon, was a surveyor and clerk, and Margaret married a doctor, William Gladville, once coroner of Moultrie.

Illinois, in 1836, and learned the carpenter's trade, which, with farming and rope-making, occupied him until 1844.
In the mean time he had studied law in his leisure hours, and in 1845 was admitted to the bar, beginning to practise in Sullivan, Moultrie County, Illinois.
The following year he returned to Decatur, and was commissioned 1st lieutenant in the 4th Illinois regiment, which he accompanied to Mexico, and was preset at the siege of Vera Cruz and the battle of Cerro Gordo.

Depleted in numbers, the Ninth received 103 men from the 128th Illinois from Williamson County and 105 imprisoned deserters, who, under the influence of the veterans of the Ninth, became acceptable soldiers.
