		Mount Jefferson is probably the hardest 4,000 footer in winter, due to the combination of considerable distance, elevation gain and exposure to severe weather.
		Mount Adams is easier, with less distance and exposure to somewhat less severe weather.
		Mount Madison in winter it is probably easier to do this in a day than to carry the extra weight needed for an overnight trip, but some people do spend the night at the Valley Way campsite.

		Early in New Hampshire’s statehood, the timber harvested in the state’s northern mountains was heavily prized so much so that the state sold all of its public land to timber companies between 1810 and 1890, including the forests of the White Mountains.

		We encountered a number of groups as we descended Mount Adams heading to the Airline trail and meet several interesting characters.
		Most of these groups only did Madison or Adams so they were still able to hike with a steady gait while we were slowly exhausting what energy reserves we had left.

	Quest of a 46er
		Adams is in the northern Presidential's and is between Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Madison.
		Another difference from the Adirondacks is that trail blazes are painted directly on the trees (as opposed to the mounted round discs we are used to seeing) and the blazes on this trail are blue.
		These guys are in their 60's and this hike was a true test of stamina (with over 3.5 hours in extreme winds and cold summer temperatures) and they did great.

	Mount Jefferson
		The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a genuine wooded playground for hikers in New England.
		The Presidential Range, which includes Mount Jefferson, Mount Madison, Mount Adams, and the granddaddy of them all, Mount Washington, is a classic destination for many hikers, and we were no exception.
		We could still make out the fl smoke billowing from the cog railway as it made its way up Mount Washington, but the weather was definitely on a downward spiral.
