MountArvon, elevation 1,979 feet (603 m), located at 46° 45Ⲡ20ⳠN 88° 09Ⲡ21ⳠW in L'Anse Township, Michigan, Baraga County is the highest point in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Arvon is a few miles from Mount Curwood, which for years had been designated as Michigan's highest spot until a resurvey in 1982 with modern technology determined that Mt. Arvon is one foot taller than Mt. Curwood.
Arvon is about twelve miles east of L'Anse, although it is about a 26-mile drive from the city as much of it lies on rugged logging roads.

The peak is not prominent as it is located in a heavily wooded area.
For years, Mt. Curwood, located a few miles south of Mt. Arvon in Baraga County, was recognized as the highest point in Michigan.
On this drive we could maybe have made it to the summit in the rental car, but as the rain on the lower elevations turned to snow the road became a little too slick for comfort, so we parked about a mile from the summit and walked.

At about 13,660 feet, after crossing a snow ledge, Kari and I drank some water and she shared some of her crackers and gorp with me. The sky was growing dark and we could hear thunder coming from around the backside of the mountain.
Eight other people were on the summit when we arrived and as we took pictures for each other, one party of six departed toward Twin Lakes.
It was soon obvious that this would be a long walk down the shoulder of Mount Elbert.

Getting to Mt. Arvon involves driving through miles of gravel logging roads in the forests, which can be tricky if the route is not well marked or if the roads are in poor shape.
Fortunately, the information provided to me was accurate and up-to-date, and I negotiated the bumps, mudpits and washouts in the road with little problem to get within a few hundred yards of the top.
After a short hike, I was at the USGS benchmark and registry on the top of Mt. Arvon.

Arvon is the highest point in Michigan located in the Upper Penisula.
Mt. Arvon is located outside of L'anse, Michigan and I found the directions in Don Holme's highpoint guide to be fairly accurate in describing the network of logging roads.
Visiting Michigan and Wisconisn this summer I was in the neighborhood of Mt. Arvon so I decided to check it out since I might not be in this area again for awhile.

The description below is for Mount Curwood, the highest point in Baraga County (and MI) according to the USGS 1:100,000 scale map.
The Highpointers Club considers MountArvon the high point as the USGS 1:24,000 maps show it higher.
When I climbed Mt Arvon a couple decades ago (before any published routes were available) I stopped at the Baraga County Tourist & Recreation Association and bought a logging road map for 50 cents.
The area around the highpoint was nice and the weather was beautiful, but we didn't stay too long on this one, because we still had a lot of driving to do.
After leaving MountArvon, we drove across the rest of Michigan, the northern tip of Wisconsin, and up Minnesota's east coast all the way up to Eagle Mountain in Superior National Park.
Wisconsin's Timms Hill (1951) and Michigan'sMountArvon (1979) were done a day apart.
On MountArvon, Captain America got to meet Elvis (the overweight version) and his girlfriend.
