  Mount Batten
The Mount Batten flying boat base, near Plymouth in southern England, was first established as Royal Naval Air Service station Cattewater in February 1917.
It became operational again in September 1928 and was renamed RAF Station Mount Batten on 1 October 1929.
Mount Batten ceased to be an operational station on 31 October 1945 but various RAF marine maintenance and training units occupied it up until it was finally closed in July 1992.

Mount Wise, where this pan was taken, was fortified to protect the dockyard's land and sea approaches.

The principle is simple: while the floor takes the weight of the panels, the battens hold them to the van's curved shape and keep them snug.
The panel is screwed to the upper and lower battens with concealed or decorative screws (I'm thinking of mirror-dome ones for a vaguely rivetty, steampunk effect), while the centre batten fits onto a concealed centre batten on the panel.
The battens are glued onto the metal van walls using Sikaflex 291 marine adhesive.

There was supposed to be gig racing from Mount Batten and out into the sound so I suggested a short coastal walk starting above Turnchapel taking in Mount Batten and then across to Fort Bovisand and back a distance of approaching 4 miles for the return journey.
The building continues apace at Mount Batten and currently the slip is the home of a 100 metre pontoon structure being constructed from huge hollow metal tubes.
Leaving Mount Batten we headed south in front of the new crescent of houses under construction on the site of the old RAF Officers' Mess, they certainly have good sea views but I can imagine spray flying in a good winter storm.

RAF Mount Batten was situated in Plymouth, Devon The base first opened in 1917 as R.N.A.S. Cattewater Seaplane Station, being renamed Mountbatten on the 1st of October 1 1928.
I wonder if anyone you know might remember Jean K Wallond as she was then, a Kentish hop farmer's daughter who came from near Tunbridge Wells, left the WAAF at the end of the war as a Flight Officer and married an RAAF pilot whilst serving at RAF Mount Batten.
We would all be very interested in anything you could tell us about the work she might have done in Y service as she never indulged much despite two of her sons joining the Services.
