Mount Diablo buckwheat, with its characteristic branched flowers, grows along the edges of chaparral, in areas that have been partly cleared of grass by rabbits.
The Mount Diablo buckwheat, Eriogonum truncatum, "has been a Holy Grail in the East Bay for several decades," according to UC Berkeley botanist Barbara Ertter, who confirmed the identification in the field on Friday.
Ertter, the curator of western North American flora at UC Berkeley's Jepson Herbarium and co-author of the 2002 revision of Mary Bowerman's "The Flowering Plants and Ferns of Mount Diablo, California," noted that one priority should be to gather seeds and start cultivating the buckwheat at the UC Botanical Garden.

The reference to "diablo" or "devil", can be traced back to 1804 or 1805, when a Spanish military expedition visited the area in search of runaway mission Indians.
In an 1850 version, General Mariano Vallejo placed the incident at the foot of Mt. Diablo, claiming that the Spanish were routed when an "unknown personage" or "evil spirit" appeared.
Of the many creative explanations for Mt. Diablo's name, perhaps the most famous is a Bret Harte short story that was published in 1863.

My quench for outdoors took me to Mt Diablo, which was an hour’s drive from the place we were staying at.
My ambitious plans of summiting Diablo, the North Peak, and Mt. Olympia, which form a circular trail, in a day, kind of crashed to the ground, when I learnt that the Diablo trail itself was 11.7 miles one-way.
From this point onwards the summit of Mt. Diablo was in constant view, from the trail.
