Mount Diablo State Park is a state park in Contra Costa County, California in the San Francisco Bay Area, located south of the town of Clayton and northeast of Danville.
The park is approximately 20,000 acres (80 km²) in area and includes as its centerpiece Mount Diablo, an isolated 3,849-foot (1,173 m) upthrust peak that is visible from most of the San Francisco Bay Area and much of northern California.
The summit of Mount Diablo itself is accessible by motor vehicle, hiking, running, or bicycle (the record time from the Athenian School in the town of Diablo to the summit is under 45 minutes; casual bicycle riders should bring plenty of food and water).

There is no direct public transportation to the park, but you can walk into Diablo Foothills from a County Connection bus stop: visit the Transit Info website for details.
The Livorna Trailhead is a quick, easy, and free way to slip into the state park, and also provides some excellent hiking through the oak-studded grassland and rock formations of this part of the east bay.
Briones to Mount Diablo Trail, open to hikers, cyclists, and equestrians, climbs easily past a big valley oak, then reaches the park boundary.

Mount Diablo buckwheat, with its characteristic branched flowers, grows along the edges of chaparral, in areas that have been partly cleared of grass by rabbits.
Park, 35, began surveying the flora of Mount Diablo three years ago as part of Ertter's ongoing surveillance of the area's plants.
Park included many of his findings in his senior thesis, which he completed last spring under the supervision of Bruce Baldwin, UC Berkeley professor of integrative biology and curator of the Jepson Herbarium.

Two weeks ago, however, UC Berkeley graduate student Michael Park discoverd a site with at least 20 of the rare plants, pleasing open-space supporters who had earlier purchased the land where it was found and donated it to Mount Diablo State Park.
The Mount Diablo buckwheat, Eriogonum truncatum, "has been a Holy Grail in the East Bay for several decades," according to UC Berkeley botanist Barbara Ertter, who confirmed the identification in the field on Friday.

Mount Diablo State park is open from 8:00 AM until sunset.
When the park is not too crowded you may drive all the way to the small parking lot at the summit, but you will get much more of a feel of the mountain with even a short hike.
There are several astronomy nights during the spring and summer when you may spend an extended evening on the mountain and may view celestial objects through telescopes provided for your use by the Mount Diablo Observatory Association.
